So I´m playing RDW vs some Simic colors guy, I got two steamkins, 3 Firebrands and Frenzy out, opponent is at 1 life... but he is just so impolite that he refuses to concede... and god prevents I kill him to ACTUALLY win the game, so I keep passing the turn until he decks himself out.
YAY!
I´m a GENIUS!

Nice Cucho, i like that story

#realmenplaywithwincons

I’m starting to really value time above all else. I drove down to NY on Sunday to play in some small poker tournament. We get down to three and one guy says, « this is taking too long, let’s chop » so I work out a chop and we agree and all drive home happy. The End.

I can’t imagine ever intentionally doing something that takes up more time when it’s not necessary.

Good plan lol, did you find out anything about his deck that you wouldn't have otherwise?

And Barney, the 6/6 army token is the wincon, I just declined to win.

This had also come up once in real life too where maybe the ethics change. I was playing Miracles against Death and Taxes and after a very grindy game 1, I found Entreat the Angels on top of my deck. Game 1 had taken 30 minutes and I had assembled Counterbalance + Sensei's Divining Top lock with some counterspells as backup in hand and a clear board. Knowing I would be nearly guaranteed the match if we only played one game, I chose to just float the Entreat on top without actually casting it to present lethal. In doing this, nearly 10 more minutes elapsed before he started mounting a board presence via Cavern of Souls and Aether Vial that threatened my position and thus, prompted me to eot a miracled Entreat, and untap, and attack for the win. Is that unethical? Am I obligated to kill my opponent when I can or is it OK to leverage the clock as long as I play at a reasonable pace?

What's your answer to this question?

That is not the issue... the issue is that you refuse to play your wincon coz its so dull that even you hate to actually win with it.

Anyone ran unto a player called "Raze"? Pretty sure he's found a way to glitch the game to lock up on you when you're winning. It's funny because every time he wins, I've never had a problem. But every time I'm about to beat this fool my game locks up during his timeout phases. From what I can tell he's also found a way to make the system skip any "stop" that you've set during his turn too.

i don't get why you guys consider winning against an opponent's mistake a loss. If your opponent doesn't win the game, they don't win the game. There is skill in Magic although not much. You have to actually cross the line. If a ferrari slams the brakes at the finish line with an 18 car length lead, they can still lose the race

I have this problem where I expect other people to be as smart as I am. When I see lethal on board I expect lethal to be done. I know. Trust me, as a manager of people, I know. They just aren't, but I can't get rid of that expectation for some reason.

So stop there and let that sink in.

Then, when I see someone make a monumental mistake, i.e. not doing lethal when lethal is available, then I feel even worse, that my deck actually WOULD have lost to someone that is to stupid to realize when they have won...... oh boy, that upsets me even more. Like, if that happened, I'm obviously a better player than that person, but the deck I built still lost to the deck they built? Ugh, that hurts the ego.

On the other hand, in a store I used to play draft at, a lot of the guys would get to Top2 then split winnings. I hate doing that. Like, I'm spending my time here to play games on a friday night. This is my hang-out time. I payed for this. Lets get one more match in and see who IS the better drafter.

Some times I'd win. Some times I didn't. It's about the challenge and the fun of the game, not the time "lost" playing a Bo3.

What's your answer to this question?

Sure that's okay. But that's very similar to not scooping to Nexus and making them go through the motions. In a timed environment, with prizes on the line, I would never scoop to Nexus. Hell, I'll slow play to, then I can force a draw.

Control players go to time every round. Aggro players get to eat lunch.

I used to play another CCG where I’d play competitive tournaments and always played quick decks. To sixtys point, I got known as the guy that would always go for lunch . It became tradition that I’d buy a coffee for the guy I beat cuz we both have so much time to kill until the next round

I love how Sixty put it

They are multiple factors to calculate in a chop (ICM considerations, skill level considerations, any type of points or notoriety that might be leveraged from winning). It's rare I ever offer a chop that I myself wouldn't consider bad and decline were I the other players.

yeah, i always just offer ICM but I'm never the one to initiate the offer. Someone usually starts asking for an even chop, i move it to ICM and other players either agree or not. I don't mind playing it out ever cuz I think I play final tables better given how tight others seem to play. I'm decent head's up and used to practice that a lot. It never comes down to head's up usually unfortunately. Hopefully this weekend at this WSOP event :)

Sun Tzu once said: "The best victory is when the opponent surrenders of its own accord before there are any actual hostilities... It is best to win without fighting."

Just played this game where opponent went AFK while I was comboing off with Nexus. Jace, Wielder of Mysteries's ultimate won me the game, so I never had to pass to a point where opponent had to make a move. Opponent was still AFK through sideboarding, and then still AFK when game 2 started, and I won the match by timeout. It is best to win without fighting, indeed.

I was playing the Momir event (deck is all lands, you pay X and discard a card to get a random creature with CMC X), and my opponent got a Demonlord Belzenlok. How's that for winning without fighting?
