I will require that it be a card that has never previously been judged in a contest, including CotW. I don't have a good way to enforce this rule, of course, so I'll have to trust that you to use your scout's honor.
Maybe I could still spin the basic concept off into something. Mana from artifact sources in an artifact block could be a thing and Myr need more love.
*"To YMTC it up" means to design cards that have value mostly from a design perspective. i.e. you would put them in a case under glass in your living room and visitors could remark upon the wonderful design principles, with nobody ever worring if the cards are annoying/pointless/confusing in actual play
Oscillating Protector Creature - Elemental Knight (C) Pulse (At the beginning of each upkeep, you may pay any amount of mana. The number of different colors of mana paid that way becomes your intensity of the pulse until the end of turn.) This creature gains +0/+X, where X is your intensity of the pulse. 2/2

5th dawn took the idea that since you don't care what colors you use to cast artifacts, you could just throw an even mix of different basic lands into an artifact deck. So it gave cards to encourage that. One thing it doesn't want to do is force people into using lots of mana fixing to get five colors asap (though people can do that if they want), it wants it to happen naturally. A good thing about sunburst having linear scaling is you can still use it pretty well at three or four colors.
A bad thing about linear scaling is it reduces design space, since there are only so many effects that scale like that (like +1/+1 counters). I've made a "threshold 3" mechanic instead that can go on many different effects. Mine can also go on colored cards which further increases design space - this slightly defeats the idea of "whatever basic lands you have will do", but it's not that bad, the card below can be cast with 60% of the possible 3 color combinations.
But there needs to be some incentive to try to get to all 5 colors otherwise people will just play 3 color decks. Most if not all cards with this mechanic have their own way of paying off getting to 5 colors that doesn't have to be the same for every card (e.g. it doesn't always have to be an activated ability). The key is to make sure that the payoff is not so strong that it forces people to heavily mana fix, but strong enough that they would like it if it could happen naturally sometimes.
Card:
Hyper Vulshok - Creature - Human Warrior Trichrome (Spend at least three colors of mana to cast this spell.) Haste : ~ gets +5/+0 until end of turn. 3/3
Converge is basically exactly what Sunburst wanted to be but better as it was more flexible. It almost feels like cheating to use it, because of that.
So I'll try to have some creativity. And note that I'm not reading any other entries so sorry if this is close to someone else's.

to be clear, chromatic is a threshold ability word that triggers when you hit three colours.

Expand the Mind - Sorcery Draw X cards, where X is the number of colors of mana spent to cast Expand the Mind. If X is 5, you may cast a spell with a converted mana cost 5 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost. If you approach a problem from every angle, perhaps the solution will dawn on you.
Chromatic Myr 2 Artifact Creature - Myr [U] Prismatic - If you have two or more colors among permanents you control ~ has "T: add one mana of any color." If you control a permanent of each color ~ gets +2/+2 1/1
Its been a while since ive made a card so hopefully the wording isnt too awful. The idea is to reward players more for going further in and the ability should be pretty easy to slap on anything ever
Made some last minute edits: - Changed the wording of Synthesize to balance it a bit. - Edited the mana ability to -what I think- is more accurate. - Added the "Synthesize vs. Sunburst" section.
Raze the Reliquary Sorcery Converge - Destroy up to X target artifacts where X is the number of colors of mana spent to cast Raze the Reliquary. You may draw a card and discard a card for each artifact destroyed in this way. "There is no more room in this world for old ideas. Melt them down so that we may forge a new future." - Koth
Fifth Dawn's chromatic theme is justified in the flavor as the green sun being created, bringing a fifth dawn. As such, I feel the most suitable way of expressing that flavor is by showing reactions to the five suns. Listing out different effects per color is too unweildly and rigid, so I opted for novelty as a trigger.
Sunrise - Whenever you add a mana of a color you didn't add this turn, <effect>
Suntouched Rootwalla Creature - Lizard [c]Sunrise - Whenever you add a mana of a color you didn't add this turn, Suntouched Rootwalla gets +1/+1 until end of turn. 1/1 Unlike reptiles on other planes, mirrodin's lizards have no need to bask at all. There is always at least one sun shining down on them at any given moment.
Note on solar - a sun can only become dominant if a permanent with solar is on the battlefield.
Witness of the Suns Creature - Elf Shaman (C) Solar (The first type of mana produced each turn rises that color's sun to zenith. makes all sun not be in zenith.) Witness of the Suns gets +1/+1 and has vigilance as long as a nongreen sun is in zenith. 2/2
Scratchpad - if it's in here, it's not my submission
Hexplate Cameo Artifact (C) Solar (The first type of mana produced each turn rises that color's sun to zenith. makes all sun not be in zenith.) : Add . If a sun is in zenith, instead add one mana of that color.
Gilded Thrasher Artifact Creature - Construct (R) Solar (The first type of mana produced each turn rises that color's sun to zenith. makes all sun not be in zenith.) Whenever a sun rises to zenith, put a +1/+1 counter on Gilded Thresher, and Gilded Thrasher gains hexproof from that color (This effect lasts indefinitely.) 2/2
----
Dawning - Whenever you cast a colored permanent spell, if it shares no colors with a permanent you control, effect.
Champion of the Suns Artifact Creature - Golem (R) Dawning - Whenever you cast a colored permanent spell, if it shares no colors with a permanent you control, put a +1/+1 counter on Champion of the Suns. Until end of turn, Champion of the Suns gets your choice of first strike, flying, menace, haste, or trample. 3/5
----
Splendor of Suns Sorcery (U) Target creature gets +3/+3 and gains lifelink and flying until end of turn. Zenith (If you spent three or four colors of mana to cast this spell, copy it. Copy it three times if you spent five colors instead. You may choose new targets for the copies.)
Thanks to the hosts and judges again for this! You folks are awesome! Ignore the browning of my nose, it's unrelated.
Quick question - are we required to create a card with Sunburst that tries to fix it? Or are we being given the freedom to explore "five color theme" in any way we wish?
Current Submission:
Sunrise Myr | Artifact Creature - Myr | {U} New Dawn — If five different colors have been added to mana pools since your last turn, Sunrise Myr has +3/+3 and flying. "With so much energy from a new sun, the Myr will be sure to achieve new and exquisite forms." [2/3]
Thoughts: Okay, so I think this is really cool, and a MUCH better way to show off "five colors matter" without it affecting Limited QUITE as much. As you can see, you track the color of mana produced by all players. Once five different colors have been added, the New Dawn triggers. So, if there's fewer than 5 colors between you and your opponent, you can't trigger New Dawn at all. This means that you probably want to have 5 different lands in your deck anyways in Limited anyways, if you want to reliably trigger New Dawn, or you can risk it and go three or four colors instead. Savy opponents can trigger them early, but the effects do linger until your next turn. Importantly, since it counts ALL mana pools, you'll likely be setting off each player's New Dawn! If you can reliably get 4 colors of mana out, so long as your opponent has the 5th color, you'll be able to get it off very reliably. In multiplayer, New Dawn will be going off even more frequently, as it's much more common for your opponents to have all 5 colors between them. At the end of the day, you're rewarded for going 5 colours, will still be able to play a normal draft without it, and will have a blast during multiplayer!

Aw man, Sunburst. The most hated of all bursts. Yes, even more hated than [c]Violent Outburst[/c]. My understanding of Sunburst was that it was trying to highlight a set theme of 5 colors, but that seems just so violently different from the overall block theme of "artifacts", which are... well.. colorless. If it wasn't for the fact that Mirrodin as a whole was already going so deep on so many other large changes, like Indestructible, I'd say this would have been a great time to introduce colored artifacts, showing how now that colors are important to artifacts, we can start seeing those. Alas, I believe it'd be too soon for that. However, what we can do is make it so that the Fifth Dawn is an event that happens, rather than something each player works towards separately. To that end, I give you New Dawn.
Metallic Paradise Land | {R} : Add to your mana pool. New Dawn— If five different colors have been added to mana pools since your last turn, Metallic Paradise may tap for instead of .
Vedalken Disseminator | Creature - Vedalken Wizard | {U} New Dawn— Vedalken Disseminator costs less to play if five different colors of mana were added to mana pools since your last turn. When Vedalken Disseminator comes into play, return target permanent to its owner's hand. [2/2]
Darksteel Miners | Creature - Cat | {R} New Dawn— If five different colors have been added to mana pools since your last turn, creatures you control are indestructible and Equipment you control has "Equip ". [3/3]
(Wow, a lot of iterations of re-wording, but each time shortened it, so now it's half as wordy, while being almost functionally identical, and with a lot less information to track. That leaves room now for flavour text! Hurray!)
Bitter Demise Sorcery (U) Destroy target creature. Prismatic - If you cast this spell with no colorless mana and no duplicate colors you may destroy two target creatures instead. It’s not just about killing them, it’s about doing it creatively.
I wanted to reward people for casting a card using the maximum amount of colors possible while still allowing the card to be playable and functional in multiple formats (such as draft where 3 to 5 color decks can be difficult to build). It's a flexible mechanic that can create any desired effect and works with many different card types. Prismatic also has some fun interactions with Cascade and Expertise type cards since you still meet the casting requirements.
Solar Flare (You may pay rather than this card's mana cost to cast it) This could also be named "Sunburst" in the alternate universe where the Sunburst we got didn't exist. It can be used as a cost reduction, or...)
Zenith of Insight Sorcery Solar Flare Scry 1, then draw a card. If Zenith of Insight's Solar Flare cost was paid, instead Scry 3, then draw three cards.
Dew Collector - Creature - Human Shaman | R Synthesize (When Dew Collector enters the battlefield, if you control a basic land of each type, draw a card. Otherwise, you may search your library for a basic land card that you don't control, reveal it, and put it into your hand. If you do, shuffle your library.) : Add one mana of any type lands you control couldn’t produce. 3/3
Synthesize vs. Sunburst:
Sunburst only existed on artifacts. This limited design options. Synthesize has the flexibility to exist on artifacts, creatures, enchantments, lands, etc.
The function of Sunburst was two-fold: +1/+1 counters for artifact creatures and charge counters for noncreature artifacts. This prevented the mechanic from having a strong identity. Synthesize has a singular function across all permanents which helps with its identity. The power
Sunburst required resources ( mana) without providing you with a method to get those resources. This required a specific deck constraint. This is the part that I think Synthesize contributes the most. The mechanic itself allows you to fetch the basic lands necessary to enable other cards with Synthesize as well as their other abilities.
Added benefit of Synthesize: It uses similar design space as Explore in a way that's flavorful for the Mirrodin block as well as flexible enough to promote interesting designs such as the Dew Collector (note that is has the reverse Naga Vitalist ability).
Refract X - This permanent has this ability when you have X different colors among permanent you control.
Arcane Kaleidoscope Artifact Refract 2 - , : Draw a card. Refract 4 - : Untap this. With every turn reads a unique spell.
Question: Do we just want a simple design to highlight the mechanic? coz I can crank the creativity up a notch if need be.
I understand it will be busy if you have a bunch of Refract at different number. But i really don't want to sacrifice its "scalability". I love the "level up" feel to it.
Since Wiz is printing those misc cards like the exert, emblem markers, might as well make one with markers of 5 diff colors.
Sun Seeker - Creature - Elf Druid Zenith (Whenever you cast a spell, you may put a sun counter of any color of the mana spent to cast that spell on this creature if it doesn't share the same color as a sun counter already on this creature.) : Add or one mana of any color of the sun counters on ~. : Add . Activate this ability only if ~ has reached zenith. (A creature with five different colored sun counters on it has reached zenith.) 1/1
I will just go with this one. Yea, this mechanic gives a lot more things to track but I still like it enough. Maybe it is time to print the opposite of poliferate in the set.
Burning Tree Berserker Creature - Giant Warrior Haste, Trample Chromatic - This creature gets +1/+0 for each color among other permanents you control. 4/4
Rationale Abridged: By making Sunburst into the artifact-independent and counter-independent Chromatic ability word, it is able to be placed outside of Mirrodin and even Kaladesh and placed into other planes such as Ravnica here (though thematically the name could relate to the sun, every plane could use this, in particular Ravnica, Alara, and Tarkir, so I opted for something more generic).
In Mark Rosewater's most recent Storm Scale column, he evaluated the mechanics of Mirrodin and Scars of Mirrodin blocks. Among these mechanics, he discussed the shortcomings of the Sunburst ability, which cares about the number of colors of mana used to pay for the spell. This mechanic proved to be unpopular and rigid, with very little design space.
Must ... resist .... submitting ... a ... bring to light functional reprint.
So, we are coming from 2 sets of artifact matters mechanics, and players will be drafting these before a single pack of fifth dawn.
White sun replica Artifact -----------------(Land-plains) (U) Until end of turn cardname becomes a land-plains in addition to its other types.(it can tap for ) ,sacrifice cardname: search your library for a plains card and put it into the battlefield, shuffle your library ,then create a white 3\2 cat creature token, this ability has affinity for different basic land types.
So yeah, permanents whose activated abilities have affinity for land types artifacts that can become lands for a turn(without ramping), then maybe also add a real mechanic like converge as a payoff
Let's see if we can overcome the shortcomings of sunburst by keeping sunburst exactly as it is for this challenge.
Excavating Engine Artifact Creature - Construct [r] Sunburst, Proliferate When ~ enters the battlefield destroy target land you control. When ~ leaves the battlefield you may search your library for a non-Mountain land card and put it into play tapped, then shuffle your library. 1/1
I think a better approach to the Sunburst mechanic already exists in Fifth Dawn, but they only used it for one card.
Kaleidoscopic Images Sorcery (R) Align — For each color, choose up to one target creature of that color and create a token that's a copy of it. Strange are the shadows cast by five suns.
I don't believe ability words were a thing in Mirrodin block. But we're already going back in time for this exercise, so bear with me.
Manafying Glass Artifact , : Add one mana of any color. Glitter - Whenever a source you control produces mana that can be of any color, ~ deals 1 damage to any target. There are more efficient ways to harvest blinkmoths, but none so satisfying.
Motivations: - 5 colours is already its own reward: you have access to all the strengths of all colours and multicoloured spells. - So instead of focussing on a player's achievement of 5-colours, I focussed on the way you get there: mana fixing. - This fits nicely into an artifact block: First, artifacts are great colour fixers because they're colourless. - Second, some of the most iconic artifacts (cf Lotuses) in Magic's history have fixed mana. - The wording of the ability is hard. If was lazy I'd just have used , but I'm not sure how interacts with e.g. cards that produce two mana of any one color.
Supernova (When this creature dies, you may pay . If you do, return it to the battlefield face-down as a 5/5 creature that's all colors.)
Dawnbreak Angel — Creature — Angel (M) Flying Other creatures you control get +1/+1 for each color they are. Dawnbreak Angel and other face-up creatures you control have supernova. To most cultures, the rainbow is seen as a symbol of beauty and good luck. To the vampires of the Mephidross, it is a sign of impending doom. 4/4
Notes: • If supernova seems overcomplicated, picture it on a 1/1 common for . • See Tezzeret, Cruel Machinist for an example of face-down creatures being something other than 2/2s.
Leonin Sunwielder Creature — Cat Warrior (C) Spectrum — Leonin Sunwielder gets +1/+1 as long as you've cast a nonwhite spell this turn. Their blades reflect the suns' light, and their skill reflects the suns' power. 2/2
Spectrum is active more consistently the less monocolor your deck is. It also synergizes with artifacts.
I honestly have little problem with sunburst as a concept. If anything, the main flaw with the mechanic was restricting itself to needing counters, which was basically fixed when it returned as converge (6 on the storm scale) in BFZ, a mechanic which would probably have been better received had it appeared in a set with a proper focus on it.
For example, in an environment in which most of your cards will be artifacts and there aren’t any multicolor cards, you shouldn’t expect to play off actual colors of permanents. This leaves us with having to use multiple colored mana somehow.
Again I think sunburst/converge are the perfect answer for this kind of dilemma. Simply make the effect play off the amount of different colors spent to play it and you’re done. As said before, sunburst’s real problem is that it limited itself to using counters, and if converge didn’t exist I would probably just make it and call it a day.
But converge does exist, so let us find another solution.
I gave myself the following restrictions:
The mechanic needs to use design technology existing during Fifth Dawn (so no ability words, keyword actions etc); The mechanic needs to make sense in a world full of artifacts (so nothing that plays off the number of colors among your permanents); The mechanic can’t do anything other keyword abilities in the block do (so no cost reduction, for example); The mechanic should reach its maximum potential with five colors but shouldn’t need five colors to do anything.
So I give you infuse:
Sunforged Myr (C) Artifact Creature – Myr 2/2 Infuse (You may pay up to as an additional cost to cast this spell.) Sunforged Myr enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each color spent to infuse it. Mirrodin's skies changed. Its surface soon followed.
In short, when you cast Sunforged Myr, you can cast it for , , , , and so on. For each additional mana you pay for it, the spell is infused once and you get one instance of the bonus effect.
Infuse is thus a blend of kicker, multikicker and converge. You can pay more to make the spell more powerful, you can do so multiple times, but each effect needs to be paid with a different color.
Flexible enough to go on plenty of other card types as well:
Lumengrid Aurora (U) Instant Infuse (You may pay up to as an additional cost to cast this spell.) Draw a card, then draw an additional card for each color spent to infuse Lumengrid Aurora.
Clearwater Goblet (R) Artifact Infuse (You may pay up to as an additional cost to cast this spell.) Clearwater Goblet enters the battlefield with a charge counter on it for each color spent to infuse it. : You gain 2 life, plus an additional 1 life for each charge counter on Clearwater Goblet.
So we have to do something that takes the place of Sunburst in Fith Dawn using the same design space?
Work area
Solar Anytime you could cast a sorcery, you may pay any amount of mana into solar. Each creature has a different effect that scales w # of colors payed that turn or checks if a specific color was payed.
# of colors spent this turn - Has somebody done this? It's a lot simpler. A lot like Yinglung's idea except it doesn't care if you spent the color before it was cast. Would make a ball lightning variant pretty cool. I think I like this better than YL"s execution, but it's too dang similar to an existing entry. Likely inspired by it too.
Myr you control get +1/+1 for each color of mana you spent this turn.
Diffuse If each mana spent to cast this was a different color. Has this been done? Looks like OlahZep did it.
Ah, screw it, I'll just make a vaguely on theme card.
Myr you control have ": Add one mana of any color".
Support 5 color from the other side- the supply side.
My Submission: It seems to me that everybody's looking at this from the demand side of the equation- how can I make playing multicolor pay off? Well, since all the good ideas are already taken But being the genius that I am, I decided to flip the equation. We're on the opposite side of the equal sign now boys. I'm providing the supply. People can have their cool multicolor cards and splash an extra color, not because I've got a new thing to splash, but because I'm making it possible. And the best way to give people the colors they need in an artifact set? Why the best artifact creatures of all time of course- the Myr. Magic's best mana dorks are going tribal.
Reflective Myr Artifact Creature -Myr (U) Myr you control have ": Add one mana of any color a Myr you control could produce". 1/2
This would be followed up with traditional lords, a colorless Myr (we got one later, but never in Mirrodin I) and some colored cost activated abilities. Fill the set out with a few good multicolor cards, make entwine costs go off color if you can and a few tempting splashables, and voila. 5th Dawn mk II. Tl;DR Myr are the best, and now they fix your mana in addition to producing it.
Ur-Golem's Astrolabe Artifact You may cast multicolored cards from your library while you are scrying them. , : Scry 1. A clue to where the ur-golems fled: out, through the narrow dark between Mirrodin's bright stars.
Quick Thoughts
I think "multicolored-matters" should have absolutely been a sub-theme of Fifth Dawn
Fifth Dawn was boring (in part) because you had nothing to do on your way to WUBRG
"Multicolored-matters" as a subtheme gives players a neat on-ramp to WUBRG
Scry was keyworded in Fifth Dawn which is cool little trivia that I forgot
Astronomer's Bauble Artifact ,, Sacrifice ~: Until end of turn, you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color paid this way. Draw a card. It is the aurorae draped above, the expanse between suns, the unknown worlds behind their blinding light.
More artifact enablers keeping with the theme of cogs, batteries, and weird artifact one offs.

Yes but 1) they'd actually be able to play with them as part of their judgment process 2) in terms a mechanic, they'd be able to see it in the context of the whole set 3) I wouldn't in general trust players to be able to judge how well-designed cards are -- just whether they like playing with them.
Do our explanations not count as part of our submissions? (If a judge looks at the list with no names included, they won't see the explanations)
The nameless file is basically for Mown. He can recognize users by their template style and explanations, so cutting those out helps him to be as impartial as possible.

just finished my initial pass, and it looks like this round was a hard one. very few stand-outs, and some of my favorite designs felt like they missed the criteria. not a lot of duds, either, though: most things wound up roughly in the middle. gonna be tricky to sort everything out.
