Instead of making a real argument, Senators will now spend the entire day bitching that Barrett is likely to help repeal the ACA. This is not an argument that brings her ability to be a Supreme Court justice into question.

Why are these people so incompetent?

I mean, if you're going to make an argument against her confirmation try this instead: The Republicans refused to confirm Obama's confirmation because they claimed that a judge should not be confirmed this close to an election. Simply stated, if you confirm this judge we will forever be locked into partisan politics. We will never again confirm an opposing party's President's judge. And for that matter, why insist on only being this partisan during election years? How about the new standard is that in order to confirm a judge, you must control BOTH the Senate and the Presidency?

Is this really what you want for our country, Republicans?

Also, fwiw, the ACA isn't popular enough for this garbage. Nobody cares - or let me rephrase, very few members of the voting populace care if you limit it to people whose vote might ever actually change.

I became so bored with the whole thing this summer that i can’t even arch Daily Show anymore. It’s beyond boring the “news” of today. It’s just the same crap all the time. I’ve started focusing on different things months ago and my life is much better for it

I agree that the hearings are pointless. They are no longer used to actually question people, just for both sides to grandstand. I saw a senator float the idea of hearings being closed to the public because more actual work would be done. I have mixed feelings about that.

We really need to figure out a system that promotes statesmen over politicians. As is, a politicians only concern is getting elected or reelected. They may tell themselves that they can only make a change if they are elected, but the truth is that they keep telling themselves that and rarely put the country above themselves. That means that they no longer have to work for the good of the country, they just need to promote the perception that they are working for the good of the country. When we now have biased news media (Probably always has been biased, but not this bad) they can pretty much sell anything as for the good of the country, at least to a large enough number of their constituents to get reelected.

I don't think term limits is the answer, although I am not against term limits. I am not sure what the answer is, but it needs to be addressed.

Random idea here with no thought behind it.....what if you could tie their ability to be reelected to certain metrics? Like, you are not viable for reelection if we are running a deficit. I guarantee you that our budget would be balanced next year if that were the case.

Edit: On the ACA, the main issue is the preexisting conditions. 25%-35% of Americans have pre existing conditions. If that gets struck down, that will cause a problem. Trump says he will protect that, but with no legislation to back that up, that falls in line with the "Mexico will pay for the wall" promise. Sure, he has put out a EC on it, but it has no teeth and does not actually protect people with pre existing conditions.

There are no silver bullets to fix that; but there are things like term limits and ranked choice voting that would probably help.

What does ranked choice voting exactly means?

Not sure why this would meaningfully help the situation though.

Honestly, I think Wintervoid was onto something with his idea of KPIs to determine whether or not you can stay in power. I have no idea how you ever get to that point though, since the two ruling parties would NEVER agree on a set of KPIs to govern them all.

Any actual meaningful change would require a major overhaul of the current system, which to even suggest such a thing would be the end of a political career.

Yeah I dunno exactly what that rate thing fixes... The Windervoid idea is cool but I think it would probably set some perverse incentives.

Well, if legally they were forced to meet specific KPIs at the pain of losing their job, that sort of answers your question.

As to the merits of the idea, I think they are very good, but not possible. It would be great if Legislators had job requirements, but I don't think a law like that would ever pass.

I would also point out that the specific example of forcing them to always run a balanced budget, has no (or only very little) justification from either an economic or a business perspective. But I'm sure we could come up with some KPIs that would apply AND be justified.

The only, well only as far as I know, reform that gets brought up is the annual Constitutional Amendment Imposing Term Limits on Congress that's from Ted Cruz, but it gets introduced every congress.

Nothing short of some sort of disaster is going to cause the US to overhaul how the government works. Almost any changes require either major bills to be passed and or new amendments to be added to the Constitution.

Lol, how many times are they going to ask Barrett the exact same question? It’s like they just want the sound byte.

You FEEL like they just want that? It’s 100% that’s what is going on

So insanely disingenuous

I don’t know how you can watch it
