If it's fully automatic, then the weapons were obtained illegally right? So the gun control issue will get stamped out and the stupid mental illness excuse will be the spotlight?

ugh, at least I can listen to Tom Petty to calm me down

My guess is it would depend heavily on HOW he got the fully automatic guns. But yeah, he's mentally ill, blah blah blah.

I've heard nothing about mentally ill. Retired accountant who was wealthy and like to gamble a lot. I only have NPR to go on. Don't watch any news.
There are a few states where you may legally purchase fully automatic weapons. I do know that is a fact but can't back it up right now. Have to get back to some work around the house but was just checking in.
Edit: This article reflects everything I've heard on the radio today.

Sounds like he had diagnosed psychosis or something crazy like that.

It also sounds like some of his guns were obtained legally

This was a pretty hijack. Chapeau to Vert

They sell automatic weapons to people with diagnosed psychosis in the states?
Oh well...

Lesson to be learnt: Don't go to open air country and western concerts with overlooking tall buildings with armed-to-the-teeth psychos in them.

America; little girl needs a licence to sell lemonade on the street, but we'll give you a gun when you open a bank account.

You have the right to bear arms; I have the right to call ya'll a bunch of idiots if you don't support gun control.

Is it a kind of irony one man with a pile of automatic legal weapons had a higher casualty count than most bombers?

From what I can tell we still don’t know much about why any of this happened. This has been 24 hr reporting ever since, but not much information.

Does it matter tho? If the guy had an arsenal of steak knives, the outcome isn't the same. I think it's more about how it got executed if you're going to look at it at all.

I mean, this move to increase hotel security is SO NOT THE ANSWER

Yeah, well that is part of the 'why' I'm talking about here. He's not supposed to have had access to that kind of an arsenal, even in the U.S. He's also not probably supposed to have been able to get it up into his room - that's not part of the answer, I agree, but still. Finally, how did a multi-millionaire get to this point in the first place - e.g.: what on earth went wrong here?

Could it be he was a regular, well-known guest of the hotel, which made the staff and/or hotel management give him some leeway trust he had earned in the past?

Gun control is a big issue in the USA. It's also the cause of all those police shootings you have over there. Being a cop in the USA just has to be a lot more difficult and stressful in a society where it is considered 'normal' that everyone is allowed, and has free access to hand guns compared to societies where it is illegal and oppressed to carry guns in public. How can you expect them to never make mistakes? If a kid grabs something out of his pockets, cops in the USA have to think it's a gun, for their own safety. In countries with oppressive gun laws, cops will never think he's reaching for a gun, and thus never mow down an unarmed person, and they will be right in more than 99.99%

Actually, I think there may be a high chance he was a regular patron, I heard he was supposedly a semi-pro gambler (NYTimes says high-stakes gambler, but either way, regular is totally possible). I'm still curious about the rest though.

Nice to see that nothing has changed here at NGA during my sabbatical.

Why would you ever think we would change?

Best thing you can do when something bad happens. Blame something outside of your control to avoid taking any responsibility and justify doing nothing.
