Not a big fan of this art (what is he even countering?) but the rest of the card looks great. I love the centered text over the "M" watermark.

I'm with you. In fact, one of my gripes has long been that Counterspell, the most iconic counter spell in Magic, has never really had a printing with great art. Some of them are okay: the Jace vs. Chandra and the Amonkhet Invocation aren't too bad. Even so, I'm still waiting for them to give it something that really wows me. I mean, just look at Cancel. I don't think there's a single version that isn't fantastic (well, maybe excluding the most recent), and they all have actually have someone countering something. Then, there's Counterspell, where we have someone looking at bubbles (admittedly my favorite art, but that doesn't mean it looks like a counter spell), someone putting on a fireworks display, meditating, etc. This would have been a great set for Wizards to commission some new art for, something that really could of blown us away. Anyway, maybe next time. Rant over.

The artist said the art direction was that this is a mage repelling a spell being cast on them. I do think it's not clear at all. I feel like they should have done the usual with the attacking spell be a different color and then the mage can have a visibly blue expulsion.

But even that is not the best direction.
