To think this used to be rare. Times sure have changed. Pretty art though.

I'm not going to lie, I'm really looking forward to getting a few of these.
It's not that they're amazing, but I have a cat deck just waiting for them.

This is the culprit. This is why cats are primarily in white, when they should be black or green. One of those precedents MTG just couldn't rip itself away from.
I don't hate the card itself, but like terror and the "black can't kill black" mentality, this lead to some questionable decisions.

I associate Cats entering white with Mirrodin's leonin. I feel like cats before that were more likely to be green catfolk like Mirri, Cat Warrior or green jungle cats.

Yeah, cats were very green and red for much of early magic. It wasn't really until Mirrodin that we started getting more white cats with the Leonin. After that Wizards made the flavor call that most domesticated pets were going to be in white, which is why we see more house cats there, though the larger wild cats do still end up in green and red pretty regularly.

it's pretty rare to see red cats these days.

I mean, you're not wrong, but we do still have cards like Rubblebelt Maaka, Regathan Firecat, and even Slash Panther in recent memory.

I did say rare, not unheard of.
Though to some degree, I feel like the firecat kinda loses some points given it's an elemental which naturally pushes it to red more than the cat factor of it.
