Piper of the Swarm
:1::b:
Creature - Human Warlock
Rats you control have Menace
:1::b:, :t:: Create a 1/1 black Rat creature token.
:2::b::b:, :t:, Sacrifice three Rats: Gain control of target creature.
1/3

So warlock is a type now. And we have the Pied Piper.

Praise to the Rats.

Warlock will be replacing Witch from now on as it has less religious connotations and more flexibility for the "dark caster" role according to MaRo.

Did witch ever find its way onto a typeline? I thought they mostly got "shaman" or "wizard"

Witch was never a type and there are cards with Witch in the name in this set includinf one of the other Warlocks. There isn’t actually anything correct in the entire statement.

I wonder why they decided to go against making Witches and Warlocks just Wizards like their predecessors? Also, please make Bard a subtype.

I see what happened. I brain-blanked that Witch wasn't already a type when I read this:

Quote:
bcrossfire asked: So, is Warlock the "Witch" type?

markrosewater said: Warlock is the new dark spellcaster type. We went back and forth between Warlock and Witch and ended up choosing Warlock.

Quote:
exarchofsechrima asked: I'm confused. So this means we can say for certain that Witch will never be a creature type? That makes me sad. Is there a reason for that? Why was Warlock chosen over Witch?

markrosewater said: Two reasons:

1) Warlock has become very popular in video games so is very familiar.

2) There are real world religions that use Witch as a name for their members.

Quote:
glovealike asked: Back in 2006 you said that male Witch is still a witch. Why suddenly Warlock this time?

markrosewater said:Warlock and Witch can both be used gender neutrally.

Quote:

bitterrootmtg asked: "There are real world religions that use Witch as a name for their members." There are also real world religions with Priests, Monks, and Druids. I don't really see why Witch is a big deal.

markrosewater said: It’s more similar to us making creature types out of Christian, Jew or Muslim. Priests, Monks and Druids are jobs held across many religions.

Quote:
magicthecasual asked: I get that warlock is the new subtype, and I love it so much. But don't you think that a card with Witch in its name should be... A witch?

markrosewater said: We decided to introduce a dark spellcaster creature type. It came down to Warlock or Witch and we chose Warlock.

Quote:
alexanderkrizak asked: How did Warlock win out over Witch in a faerie tale set? There’s a lot more of the latter in faerie tales.

markrosewater said: It’s not just this set. It’s a creature type we’re using from now on.

Alright that’s enough i’m not gonna read all of them but ywah a quick scan shows this as very reasonable. And welcome, even if it means my Jodah 5C legendary Wizards EDH won’t be getting as many new Black toys.

With Noble and Warlock becoming creature types, I wonder how much they'll backport them, if at all.

I think there are three main options:
1) No backporting.
2) Backporting only for cards with the type in their name, like Dread Warlock and Falkenrath Noble.
3) Backporting for every card that would get the type if printed today, like Accursed Witch and Brago, King Eternal.

If I had to guess, I'd assume they'll do option 2. Dinosaurs basically got option 3, but races tend to be a lot more straightforward than classes.

I imagine they won't take "Wizard" away from anything that already has it but they might replace "Shaman" on cards that have it outside of Lorwyn. Things that don't have a class like Brago are likely to get it added. Dread Warlock might end up like Bloodline Shaman which was originally in a set with wizard tribal before Shaman was a type so now it has both.

Sort of.

Quote:
studiodiemwing asked:
Is Cleric considered a "spellcaster" type? Are Warlocks going to be primarily black in the same way that Clerics are primarily white? Also is it weird how people are freaking out over new creature types?

markrosewater said:
With Warlocks we now have five spellcaster creature types - Cleric, Wizard, Warlock, Shaman and Druid. Magic likes having things that come in a set of five that can be connected to colors.

Quote:
papa-yawg asked:
So now that Warlocks exist, do Wizards exist in Mono-Black anymore? Or Black in general? Or at just a highly reduced quantity?

markrosewater said:
They still do.

Can't wait for the inevitable batching.

Strategic Adventuring

Enchantment
Fighters you control have double strike. (Soldiers, Warriors, Rogues and Knights are fighters.)
Spellcasters you control have hexproof. (Wizards, Warlocks, Clerics and Shamans are spellcasters.)
