If left unchecked, won't this eventually 'Geddon everybody?

Yup, although presumably the game is moving toward an end if you are continually attacking with an 8 power creature

In a way, this is actually a nice addition for mono red commanders, as it takes red's lack of a strong late game and circumvents it by gradually bring the game state back to the early game where red is best.

Precisely why I love it.

Seems pretty great. It's a reasonable threat on board an if it meets Constant Mists or some other repeat-fog scenario, it brings on the Armageddon. I've wanted to play around with cards like Aggressive Mining and this seems like a fun way to justify or support the "tank my own lands for profit" plan.

Red really needs land destruction in multiplayer, but that land destruction needs restraints to keep it from sapping fun from the game. Any card that fulfills that need within appropriate restrictions while remaining playable is a good card for MTG.
