Welcome to The Lost Mine of Phandelver Adventure
A D&D 5e Adventure DMed by Garren_Windspear

Image

More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver's Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge, the Forge of Spells, where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when the orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.

A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magical treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave. was lost.

For centuries, rumors of buried riches have attracted treasure seekers and opportunists to the area around Phandalin, but no one has ever succeeded in locating the lost mine. In recent years, people have resettled the area. Phandalin is now a rough-and-tumble frontier town.

Neverwinter : The Driftwood Tavern - Day 0

Each of you have received a letter from your friend and patron Gundren Rockseeker, scrawled quickly in his own hand on a mostly-clean bit of parchment and bearing the family crest:

Quote:
Friend,

The gods have seen fit that my brothers and I should happen across quite the opporunity. In support of this endevor I shall be needing armed escort to see that a wagonload of neccessary supplies makes the journey to Phandalin safely. Meet me tonight, an hour after sundown, at the Driftwood Tavern and make ready to set out at dawn.

~Gundren

Roughly an hour after sundown you make your way through the winding city streets to a courtyard near the Coriol Street Gate. Squatting squarely on the corner of Coriol Street is a two story stone building that bears a swinging wooden sign in the shape of a three-masted galleon riding atop a banner emblazoned with the taverns name. Large barrels as tall as an adult human are stacked on either side of the main entry's stone stairs.

Once inside, you find
Gundren at a long wooden table near the back. The dwarf is joined by his warrior companion who he introduces as Sildar Hallwinter, and soon you find that five others received letters identical to yours. He explains the task before you: He and his escort need leave immediately and make preparations in Phandalin. The six of you, he excitedly explains, will pick up a wagon full of supplies in the morning and escort it safely to Brarthen's Provisions for which you will be rewarded with ten gold pieces each.

"Now!" he chuckles and pats his companion on the back as he stands. "Enjoy your night and your meal. Get to know each other, you leave at first light. An associate will meet you outside this same in with the wagon tomorrow and the pair of us shall meet you in Phandalin in three days’ time. If all goes according to plan there shall be more drinks to be had and more coin to be made. Ha!" Then the pair head outside and begin to saddle up into their ponies with haste, visible through the front windows of the tavern. Quickly, the pair heads out the city gate, leaving the six adventurers to wonder what the big opportunity might be and more importantly who each of their new companions was.

It was a surprise to the usual costumers of the Driftwood Tavern how Lee Pai Long got drunk with a single horn of ale that night. The answer was obvious, though. He went to the meeting with Gundren Rockseeker already drunk. As the dwarf and his sellsword leave the table, the monk shouts to the waitress to bring the group more ale. He than burps loudly and starts looking at his new companions. "Ha!, Funny little fellow this Rocksomething dude. As long as he brings the coins and the wine, I can't complain. So, what we have here? Private farmer, priest whatever, the bastard son of a giant, a kid and... I must be really drunk to be seeing ghosts. Anyway, welcome to my house, guys. You're currently at my dinner table. I'm Lee Pai Long, or, as they usually call me, that drunken bastard. And since Dalila just arrived with our special, what better way to start our partnership than a toast? I salute you guys!" He then hiccups, grabs a horn from the waitress' tray and raises it.

Booker lounged in his chair with an arm hanging over the back. He glanced around the table and studied the group before raising his hand in a toast and answering Joab's question:

Aye, I've worked with the Rockseekers before. Good bunch of dwarves, those. More adventurous than most around here, though. If something has Gundren this worked up, it has got to be something big.

Joab's eyes light up at the word "adventurous."

Did you actually see any action? I have worked for him twice and never saw so much as a kobold. Its easy money, but, eh...

Joab shrugs

Sandal regrets immediately having seated at the side of the drunkard. He wants to slap his face in consternation, but he sustains his composure with stoicism. Hearing the conversation at his side, he joins it to try to forget the person at his side. "I know Gruden Rockseeker. Not so much as I wanted, but he was a great friend of my father and he helped me in the hour of my direst need. This fact alone speaks greatly of his character. When he asked for my help, I dropped everything I was doing for the opportunity to repay my debt to him."

He grabs his ale and brings it to his lips to sip a little when the drunkard proposes a toast.

Booker - Rogue

Booker leaned forward and shook his head.

Not a lot of action in my kind of work, except for the street thugs and lackeys from competing shops. But, this job will be the furthest from the city I've been yet. Who knows what we'll find out there.

Vaeca Mondrian

Vaeca sat quietly with a faint smile on his face as he took in the look of his fellow escorts. He had been back in civilisation not long, and it was still a new and refreshing experience for him. This motley crew seemed to be from very different backgrounds but all with at least one thing in common - in their own way they certainly seemed to be experiencing life to the fullest. He noticed slight unease but hoped an evening spent over a few tankards would bring the group together. He wasn't expecting much in the way of action, as a few of the others were, but it was always good to be prepared.

Taking a sip from his ale he turned as the half elf sorcerer spoke. Listening to each reply in turn he held his tankard up to toast and nodded to the monk, who seemed to have had a few toasts already. "Indeed..."

"Never worked with him no. But my father..." he paused as memories flashed through his mind. "knew him. He always told me Gundren was a good man to know and if I ever needed anything to get in touch with him. So I did, and here I am."

He spread his hands and sit back, again sensing the eagerness of adventure in the air and while it enticed him he kept his thoughts clear. He was still getting his bearings in this world again after the solitude of the wilderness he knew he had to keep his wits about him.

"Be careful what you wish for my friend." he said as he looked at the half elf with a half smile. "Action will find you when you least expect it."

Vaeca was still getting used to talking at length to people. So he retreated into his thoughts for a moment as he waited for the others to continue the conversation.

Argun -

The lanky fellow with the bow sits listening, taking chunks off of an apple with a dagger and eating them, one by one. As the silence grew he leaned forward and said, "Ain't n'er met the fella m'self, but my uncle made a wagon for him and said he's good folk. 'S long as his coin is good, I'm glad for the work, m'self. Y'all done this kinda work a'fore?"

Booker - Rogue

Booker nods his head slightly.

I've done work like it in the city before. I mostly deal in getting small items from point A to point B, but occasionally something bigger needs moved. Never have been much of a traveler, though, so this city to city business is new to me.

He pauses as he looks around the table and a realization dawns on him.

No dwarves.....?

"I sincerely hope there will be no fight. I am definitively not a fighter."

Sandal stands up and says to his companions looking each one at the eyes for a brief moment, but for the drunkard. "I think this is the right time for presentations. My name is Sandal. I am a pr... a scholar of religion and medicine. I am here to repay my debt to Grunden. I don't know anything about guarding duties. My guess is that Grudren called me for this job mostly for my skills than my fighting prowess.

Sandal, then sits and examines his companions thinking to himself. Grundren must be really desperate to form such a chaotic group. I hope Sune protects us from harm at the journey, because this group surely doesn't seem capable of that.

He puts a hand in his pocket and holds his holy amulet for protection.

Lee hugs Sandal and starts talking very close to the Cleric's face, very loudly. ""Howdy, Sandal! I used to wear sandals all the time when I was at the monastery. Probably the best thing about that place. But relax, I have no plans of wedging you!" The monk laughs, again loudly, of his own joke. "In fact, I'm pretty sure you and I will get along pretty well. I'll take extra care so that you reach Phandelver..." He stops for a hiccup. "...in one piece." Lee then releases Sandal, drinks more Ale, slaps the waitress' ass, with another big laugh during the process, and turns back to his new friends. "So, you all heard my buddy sandals here. Who are you guys?"

Vaeca sits quietly for a moment as the others talk. It is important for them to be comfortable with each other. Although this escort job should be fairly straight forward there is always the possibility of the unforeseen happening. While the others seemed capable he hoped they were all alert and had their wits about them once they set off in the morning. For now though he ordered another tankard of ale. He knew his limits and a few more would relax him a bit.

It reassured him that everyone knew Gundren in some way and all spoke well of him. He knew his father had held him in high enough esteem but knew he never heard the whole story. It seemed now, as he had suspected, that here was the possibility of a connection to some less savoury sorts. Not that it bothered him, although he appreciated his father's strong morals when he was young Vaeca had long since lost interest in the affairs of most. It bothered him not what other people did with their lives, as long as they didn't interfere with him.

"It is a pleasure to meet you all, my name is Vaeca," he said.

Vaeca smiled at the monk's antics and considered his ale before he took another sip. Perhaps he would refrain from having too many more ales tonight. He wanted to be clear and focused in the morning and ready for whatever the day's travel brought them. He wasn't in it for the money as much as the experience, and putting on a good show might get him more work through Gundren. Perhaps the other escorts would have some contacts as well.

"I have not done this type of work before really, though I have travelled a bit. My father used to be a guide, but I myself have been avoiding civilisation for the most part. I decided I wanted a change of scenery and to see the world a bit, and decided to start with this."

He looked around at the group and sized them up. A fighter, a cleric or some sort - he had wanted to say priest, a roguish type, the wild looking sorcerer, and of course the drunken monk. They should be able to hold their own against any altercations if it came to it, as long as it was relatively minor. It would be best to reach Phandalver without having to stop and deal with anything though of course. From there he hoped to head off in whatever direction seemed like a good idea. His lack of plans felt rather liberating.

"It's reassuring that a few of you have some experience with this. While I don't have much I know it's important to keep one's wits about you," he looked at the monk pointedly. "We should hope for no fighting along the way, but all the same must be prepared for it."

At this he turned to Sandal.

"What use would Gundren have for a scholar escorting supplies? Does he have something else in mind when we get to Phandalver?

"Well, I didn't ask this question to myself before. I don't have the slightest idea. Maybe he is trying to help me again, giving me a purpose. I am kind of a wanderer now."
Sandal answers Vaeca, then he turns to face Lee still calm, but with some traces of irritation in his voice. "I, on the other hand, doubt that you and me could be friends. While I don't think a drink is a sin, indulging yourself in your vice certainly is. I barely know you and I think you will be a liability to our party already."

He stands up and starts to leave the table. "Now gentlemen and drunkard, excuse me. I have to give my apologies for that barmaid in the name of our party. As I always say "Make love, don't make war." See you all tomorrow."

He winks and disappears inside the crowd after the beautiful barmaid.

Joab

Joab laughs at Lee's drunkenness and decides to try the ale for himself.

I don't guess I actually introduced myself. My name is Joab, but a bunch of people call me Abaddon. This is a bigger group than I am used to seeing. I wonder what we are escorting?

Booker watched the cleric disappear into the crowd after the barmaid, then looked at Lee.

"I think he likes you!"

The monk nods to Booker, chuckling. "Hehe, Damn you, sandals! He has always been a grumpy bastard, since the day we first met. When was that again? Screw it, I can't remember. I just hope he has not fallen in love for Dalila already. Chick is a whore. She's going to eat our priest for breakfast." Lee takes another sip of his ale and turns back to Vaeca. "Worry not, big friend. Someone messes with our package, we mess with their life. Now drink with me. It's in your eyes that you love a good ale as much as I do!" Another trip to Lee's mouth leaves his tankard empty.

Argun Woodfence

The archer watches the exchanges, scratching the side of is his head. His hair is but stubble on the sides and back, the tuft of brown on his crown and forehead making him look somewhat like a five foot ten paintbrush. He chuckles and tosses his apple core into the bowl that had held his dinner and sheathes his blade.

"Y'all are a funny lot. Think this is going to be fun little hike," he says, standing and killing the last of the ale in his mug. "I'll save my carousin' for the end of the road, though, if it's all the same. See y'all in the mornin'."

He quickly runs hand across the bandolieer on his chest, touching the darts sheathed there, trailing the leather down to the hilt of the short sword on his right hip, a blade that matches the one strapped over his left shoulder. He grabs his bow and his pack, putting the latter on with one strap and keeping the former in his hand.

He looks at Lee and says, "I'm with your priest friend. I'd rather we not get into any scraps if'n we don't hafta. Then again, if ain't gonna hafta, I don't know why they're bringing me along."

The corner of his mouth grows a little half smile. He nods to the table and then heads towards the rooms, leaving the hall for the evening.

Booker nods in agreement as Argun leaves the table.

"I'm all for drinking and having a bit of fun, but let's get the job done first. If we want a chance at repeat business, we'd best make sure this job goes off smoothly."

At that, he scoots away from the table and heads for the door.

"I'll see you lot in the morning."
