I'd like to know what is KoD's definition of a fun promise.

@Zinger:

*Shrugs.*

Everyone's heart is different. I can no more speak about what is in my hear than I can speak of your heart. Ergo I cannot speak about what is fun.

I'm skeptical that JD failed to account for alignment-related complications when designing this game, especially given that he has two players who explicitly exempt such claims from their own NLPs.

But I suppose we can try it if everyone wants to. I don't really see how that would hurt town.

I will not be making these vague promises to start the game. I think they're a good idea, if marginally futile, but my role disinclines me from making ANY promise lightly. These things have consequences.

Na, it's up to you if you want to break something that sacred.
My role says otherwise.

Unvote, Vote: Tevish

I expected that there would be several players in this game who wouldn't want to make the promises regardless of their alignment, but tevish is not one who i expected to bow out. He's giving mechanical reason to not want to, which makes sense, but given the early gamestate I'm more inclined to take it as indictive of him being mafia rather than him being town and thinking the promises will potentially hurt him anyways.

you're pushing making early promises in a game whose central mechanic is making promises; i don't think his unwillingness to make a promise this early is particularly indictive of being mafia
ill even vote: rag over this actually

because ex is someone who i expected might not want to make the promises even if he were town

don't worry though, i've got my eyes on lots of people, even if i'm not pressuring them yet

Its obviously because the central mechanis of the game is making promises that i'm pushing making early promises. It would be a strange thing to push for otherwise. In the case of tevish he explained fairly clearly why he didn't want to make a promise this early (because he's afraid of being affected detrimentally either for making it or for breaking it). This leads me to three interpretations

1: Tevish is mafia and knows that he'd break such a promise by making it
2: Tevish has prvilieged information that i don't have which leads him to believe that making the promise isn't safe even though he's fairly confident he won't break it
3: Tevish is coming into the game with the same knowledge that I have, but is interpreting the gamestate and strategy differently than me.

I personally find 3 unlikely because I feel like as vanilla town (i'm not claiming vanilla town) tevish would find this strategy appealing. This means its eitther 1 or 2, and although I think either are feasible, the odds of tevish being mafia are still increased significantly above baseline as a result of 3 not being likely in my eyes.

The fun in making promises you can't break is in cornering scum using them.

You said your role says otherwise with respect to breaking a promise.

Your role, much like any role dealing with promises, will give you the consequences/benefits of breaking/maintaining a promise.

Strictly speaking, your role doesn't prohibit you from breaking a promise you made. You just have to deal with the consequences of doing so.

That's the relation.

Oh I think we’re having a slight misunderstanding here. My role implies that there are roles that can force someone to break a promise. Whatever that means or how it works I’m not sure.

Oh.

Well then. That'll be interesting to see pending what promise.

I mean, I guess if someone openly made a promise to, say, not target someone, then a role could, feasibly, use the power of the promise to force it to be broken (ie. force the promiser to target the promisee thereby breaking the stated promise).

That's actually need if that's how that works.
