In fairness, that tends to happen when an oppressed people end up seizing power.
The Sisters of Stone Death were pretty much awful to the elves, who were already driven underground by the Silhana thousands of years ago.

The Golgari talk a big game about being a home for the homeless and outcasts, but that's largely window dressing for the scumbags in charge,

True that.

The DND book makes Ravnica seem like a pretty decent place to live.

It also resorts to a stereotypical parun alignment that doesn't make sense, so here's their real character alignments:

Isperia: Prep

Aurelia: Prep

Lazav: Goff

Borborygmos: Punx

Niv-Mizzet: Nred

Obzedat: Poser

Rakdos: Goff Punx

Trostani: Prep Poser

Zegana: Prep Nred

Welp, someone who's not looking for a promotion. Mind blown.

Its an interesting premise all around, though I think Bazda turns to accept the elf a bit too fast, and the machine seems to pop up up without being mentioned coming "on-screen".

I actually didn't like this story much and I've enjoyed the other slice-of-life stories thus far. I am pretty biased, however, because Selesnya and Simic are my two favourite guilds. I just found the characters very whiny and flat in this story. The "no one disagree with anyone!!!" mentality weird because I remember the books allowing for some wiggle room like that. The Selesynans just seemed so petty with how they didn't seem to really want to help that elf. They just wanted him to stop complaining and get better. It felt like a weird Saturday morning cartoon episode. I got so confused when the dryad snapped on the elf and he just decided to walk off and I figured he was going to die and everyone was pretty chill about him wandering off to his very-likely death.

Today's not-UR (Magic Story): A peak at the Brandon Sanderson Innistrad novella......

Quote:
It's here, Magic Story fans. Brandon Sanderson, creator of the Cosmere universe and steward of The Wheel of Time, has made his first entry in the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse. Set on Innistrad, Children of the Nameless introduces Davriel, a new Planeswalker designed by Sanderson, in a story that—well, we don't want to spoil anything, so you'll just have to download the free novella yourself and find out.

Quote:
CHILDREN OF THE NAMELESS
Since the day she was born, Tacenda has been both blessed and cursed. When her protective spell fails in the night and her Kessig village is attacked, she seeks revenge against whom she believes responsible: the demon-consorting Lord of the Manor.

Since I couldn't find a link in the article, you can download the novella for free at www.mtgstory.com.

What a pleasant surprise.

Just finished reading it, and there is quite a lot to unpack:

- An year has passed since Avacyn went crazy

- Female demons are now canon again

- There's entities running around that might be pieces of a dead plane

Overall I quite enjoyed it, though the victory kind of felt like an asspull. Shame also that the Nameless Angel was not the one I expected.

Quite a lot of work making demons sympathetic.

BTW according more reddit interviews Willia is and the geists are aligned. With the entity inside Tacenda the point was to have villains.

I finally caught up on stuff, and something that has been bothering me about it I feel like asking about here.

How come Ugin didn't lose his planeswalker spark when he died and became a spirit or something on the meditation plane?

I was under the impression dying causes you to lose the spark, even if you become an undead of some sort in the process.

Ugin died in the original timeline and never came back to life. His spirit floated around but the spirit is not a planeswalker. Ugin in the current timeline only went into stasis, which is why the dragon storms stayed around after his defeat by Bolas.

That isn't what I'm talking about, I'm talking about the point he got killed the 'first time' (second time in the order things have been written) by Bolas in the Meditation Plane, but wasn't really destroyed, and came back with spirit form and powers yet still a planeswalker.

Probably had to do with how he "died".

That and actually killing, for real, a pre-Mending 'Walker was a really hard thing for most non-Planeswalker things in the Multiverse to accomplish. It's quite likely that his first "death" just freed his mana-based spiritual form from his original body, as 'Walkers back then were mostly mental beings that shrugged off lost bodies like dirty clothes.

I've been reading the novella in fits and spurts, but that's mostly because the holidays have suuuuuuucked for my spare time.

But overall, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Not surprising since it's Brandon Sanderson, who is a damn great author.
I really like a lot of the inversions of the normal tropes. The demons are all surprisingly fun characters, with Miss Highwater particularly standing out as a character to enjoy, not least because female demons are staggeringly refreshing.

But beyond all that, the thing that feels so pleasant is the the characters are all CHARACTERS first instead of **** pastiches of characteristics associated with a damn color. But they still feel organic in matching the color alignments as well. It's just really nice to have 3 dimensional beings instead of 'beep-boop, I am a black character. I will be evil now.' robotic crap.

Helps that almost all characters were designed as three-coloured, which already lends to a lot of complexity.
