They wanted to position her as an antagonist initially and had to backpedal when they decided she was well positioned to be a protagonist.
As a consequence, they actually had to approach her with a degree of nuance to play in the same space.

Then they decided they needed to nuke that and nuance went into the trash. So she became a paper thin character that they tried to glue some buzz topics to so that the naysayers would look like awful people for not being sensitive enough.

Yeah, it made for an interesting dynamic between her and Sorin in the Wintermute Zendikar novel. Shame they threw that out; apparently we can't have characters with both likeable and less likeable facets to their personality.

Bothers me since they clearly don't mind having Liliana as a aligned protagonist, yet they had to clean up Nissa's act.

I guess they thought that selfishness and willingness to murder are less wide scale real world issues than racism.

They're certainly less visceral than systemic prejudice; casual murder is bad but its easier to stomach than someone thinking someone else shouldn't live on principle. Liliana's hatred of angels is amusing, but Nissa's mindset is too close to home to bigots.

That's why losing a villain to a cardboard hippie is a bit tragic.

I hate when villains become heroes and it just means dropping the bad parts of their personality and not actually develop over time to fit it.

Less unlikeable bits don't make you more likeable? I suppose the people in my life like me most for my gentleman thief exploits, so you may be on to something.

More seriously, the Nissa retcon was where I gave up on following the MTG story. I just lost faith at that point.
