Last time we looked at Lurker, and the things that go bump in the night. This time. I'll give a brief preview of the mechanic Skald, representing the sages and fonts of secret wisdom of Aralheim

Skald X is an ability that can appear on any type of permanent, though it mostly appears on creatures. It means "As long as this is tapped, spells you cast cost :x: less to cast. This can't reduce the amount of mana you pay to less than 1." As long as your Skalds are hard at work, their arcane lore is yours, letting you power out your spells.

Curious Witch
:u::u:
Creature – Human Wizard {C}
Skald 1
Most turn to shunned magic out of a lust for power or a desperate need. Some few are simply too blinded by academic interest to realize the practical aspects of their craft.
1/3

Naturally, Skald is found primarily in Blue, though it is also seen to a lesser extent in White and Green. Most Skald cards have Skald 1, and few Skald creatures have any way to tap themselves outside of entering combat.

Jotun Runesage
:5::w:
Creature – Giant Cleric {U}
Skald 2
At the beginning of your end step, if Jotun Runesage is untapped, gain life equal to its power.
4/5

Skalds exist at all points on the mana curve. While it may seem odd to have the Runesage reduce your costs when you've already made 6, getting there with cheaper Skalds makes it a more attractive option.

Hinterland Sage
:3::g:
Creature – Human Druid {R}
Skald 1
Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, draw a card.
3/2

Being a lot less weird and funky than Lurker, I'm finding I don't have too much to say about Skalds, so here's the rare preview, Hinterland Sage. Erm... yeah. Oh! Right, so far I've got one noncreature Skald in the set, though that could change as design goes forward. What is it, you may ask?

Well, it's this place...

Library of Damnable Truths
Land {C}
:t:: You lose 1 life.
Skald 1

I wish the mechanic had a more setting-neutral name.

I find it weird that Winch is (ie, it has no colorless cost).

Why is that land common? I have a feeling it's busted, too. I find it weird that this is not a red mechanic, especially in light of Hardened Berserker's recent printing.

Not sure if there's much design space, but it creates interesting gameplay decisions.
