Not to necro, but I've been reading through this set and it's really cool ... but (there's always a but, isn't there?

The power level and complexity of this set both seem super high. A lot of the ideas are super interesting but it kind of feels like you have enough ideas for two or three sets in here--War Machine alone is a very unfamiliar (but cool) change. Even if you're only ever theorizing about this set in a way that highly enfranchised Magic players would play it--I think it might be really hard to grasp even for people who have been playing the game for ages.

thanks. I agree that it's fairly complex, but I think a lot of that comes from reading it as a spoiler instead of encountering it in packs. I made a serious effort to keep the commons, if not simple, at least simpler than the rest of it, and that's the bulk of most people's experience. there's a lot of keywords, but I tried as hard as I could to keep them as intuitive as possible too, although admittedly yes War Machine will take some getting used to. I feel like it's unfamiliar, but not really unintuitive, so it shouldn't be too hard to pick up, and most of the rest are fairly simple effects. Unveil is probably the most complex of them on an intuition level since it asks players to use cards in ways they're not really used to, but on most Unveil cards, especially the commons, it's not all that wrong to swing with it right away anyway so if you just want to use it as a delayed etb thing you can do that.

anyway, I'm glad you like it. there's still a little more that needs to be done (I've got about 30 slots left to fill) but I'm generally pretty happy with how it's turned out.

I just realized that, with the wording on War Machine's reminder text, it may not be clear what happens if you swing with a Ship and a single creature, and that creature dies before blocks. I think the most intuitive thing is for it to continue attacking, but that conflicts with a strict reading of the reminder text. what do you guys think? which makes more sense and would you change the reminder text to accommodate it and if so how?

I agree that it should continue attacking based on a general and loose sense of consistency in Magic. I think the reminder text could be changed to accomodate this. I have two suggestions, but honestly there seem to be plenty of options.

This artifact may attack, but only if a creature you control also attacks.


You may declare this artifact as an attacker as long as you also declare at least one creature as an attacker.

that makes sense. how about a hybrid of the current text and the second suggestion:

(As long as you are attacking with a creature, you may declare this artifact as an attacker. It gets summoning sickness.)

that ditches the "as though it were a creature" for aesthetic reasons but I think that's ok.

I don't honestly like that (nor the current reminder text), because attackers are declared all at once and this gives the impression of segmenting it.

I agree you can ditch the as though it were a creature.

took a little under 7 months, but this set is done, at least as a draft. I may make changes after playtesting, but I may not, who knows! I will start on the second set of the block after this gets some play.
