Welcome one and all to Pro Tour YMtC, the premiere contest of the forums. Over the next several months, this contest will test all your skills as a designer, from mechanics, to flavor, to that secret special something that makes a card viscerally memorable. It is my honor and privilege to be your host.

The Format

There will be seven open audition rounds. Contestants will receive placement points based on how they do in these rounds. At the end of these open auditions, a Wild Card round will be held, open to anybody who participated in all seven audition rounds without placing in the top 7. The top 7 contestants with the most points will join the winner of the Wild Card round to form the Top 8, who will then face-off bracket-style in a series of Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and finally, the Grand Finals themselves.

The Judges

Please give a warm welcome to this year's judges!

Each round will last one week, followed by a week's break for judges. I will judge a round only if, by the end of that week, less than three (<3) judges have submitted their grades.

Round 1

Often in Magic, there is discussion of top-down design and bottom-up design. Top-down means that you start from the top of the card—that is, the name and the art—and work down. Phylactery Lich is a perfect example of this. In Dungeons and Dragons, there exists the concept of the Lich, who bound his soul to a Phylactery and was never able to truly be defeated until that otherwise-innocuous relic was demolished. His entire mechanical execution centered around evoking this flavorful concept as iconically as possible.

On the other hand, to design a card bottom-up means that you start with the bottom of the card, where the P/T, rules text, and card type, are, and build it up from there. You could imagine that a card like, say, Vent Sentinel, was designed this way—Rise of the Eldrazi had a defender subtheme, they gave that deck a win condition in Limited/Sealed at Common, and the name and flavor text were filled in later. What's most important here is the effect a card has, and its role in the set it's in. While flavor certainly matters, what the card is is ultimately incidental compared to what the card does.

For this round, I challenge you to meet me in the middle.

I'm going to give you two word boxes. The first is of fifteen flavor-words. Your card must include at least ONE of these words in its name. The second is of twenty-five mechanical phrases. Your card must include at least TWO of these, exactly as written, in its rules text. The only individual exception is that the phrase "13" may be spelled out (as in Archive Trap). Also, you may capitalize the first letter of a phrase if it begins at the beginning of a sentence. Other than that, I mean that you should literally be able to copy-paste exactly what I wrote into your card. Please bold your selections, or list them at the top of your post.

Flavor words (choose at least 1):

• Deathfrost
• Timeless
• Gwyllion
• Jump
• Abominable
• Quartermaster
• Moxie
• Cellar
• Flawed
• Vorpal
• Ascension
• Bringer
• Cauterize
• Ultimatum
• Dragonslayer

Mechanical phrases (choose at least 2):

• at the beginning of your precombat main phase,
• graveyard from your library
• unspent
• you don't own
• if a card with the chosen name is revealed this way,
• Karn planeswalker
• seven cards
• Reinforce

• Coward
continues to burn
• that much damage plus
• 13
• gold counter
• three or more spells
• can't block unless
• lose the
• double
• Power-plant
• Flying, trample, haste
• exile the rest
• discard up to
• only mana produced by
• copy of any non
• one on the bottom

The round shall last until noon EST on July 22nd. Best of luck!

The Vorpal Blade -
Legendary Artifact - Equipment
Equipped creature gets +1/+0 and has deathtouch and trample.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent, if you control a Karn planeswalker, they lose the game.
Equip
The irony was that in attempting to end all conflicts swiftly, Karn has forged the greatest weapon that gave cause to even more conflict.

Timeless Bastion
Legendary Artifact (M)
Creatures you control have vigilance.
At the beginning of your end step, if you have cast three or more spells this turn, each opponent sacrifices a creature.
, , Discard seven cards: Take an extra turn after this one. Timeless Bastion can't untap until the end of an opponent's turn.

Sure, let's give this a shot.

Visoth, the Flawed Reflection
Legendary Creature - Specter (M)
Flying, trample, haste
Whenever Visoth, the Flawed Reflection deals combat damage to a player or you cast a spell you don't own, exile the top card of target opponent's library. You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled, and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast that spell.

By the way, you have top-down and bottom-up backwards. Top-down cards start with a flavor concept, while bottom-up cards start with a mechanical idea. The top half of a card contains its name, art, and types, while the bottom half contains the rules text and stats.

Here's an article with MaRo explaining what top-down design is: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/a ... 2003-06-09

Deathfrost Soulpicker
:2::b::b:
Snow Creature - Horror
Deathtouch
Whenever Deathfrost Soulpicker deals combat damage to a player, you may pay **. If you do, return up to one target creature card in that player's graveyard to the battlefield under your control and exile the rest.
What the Soulpickers don't take might as well not exist.

Opinion: Middle-in design is an interesting idea, but given that most of these rules texts have only ever been on one card and we have to choose two of them, our main focus is going to be trying to come up with mechanics that fit

I don't think that's right? I count 18 of 25 that appear with reasonable frequency, and that's just from memory.

Moxie! sorry. i've obviously spent too much type typing my own username

I blame urban dictionary for popping up a result when i googled it to make sure I spelled it right

Selections:
* Cellar
* graveyard from your library
* Reinforce

Noise from the Cellar |
Sorcery | {U}
Whenever a creature card is put into your graveyard from your library, you may cast Noise from the Cellar from your graveyard. Exile Noise from the Cellar as it resolves if it was cast this way.
Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.
Reinforce 1 — (, Discard this card: Put two +1/+1 counters on target creature.)

Notes:
I went a lot of different ways with other cards before settling on this mix. There were some neat cards I just couldn't fit into the criteria (like Time Jump or Flawed Mox). However, this one seemed to evolve naturally from both the mechanics and the flavour. It's a basic re-animation spell that can also repeat given the right circumstance. The card has an in-built way of getting into the graveyard early if you need it to through Reinforce, so I think would function very well in a set with that ability, and even a tiny graveyard or milling theme would make this card a bit of a payoff. The real money is when you get this card into a dedicated Self-Mill deck. If it goes to the graveyard at the same time as a creature from your library (say, being part of a Glimpse the Unthinkable), it will trigger. Yay!

Question: Are we allowed to make lowercase the flavor words if we combine them with other words? For example, would Endbringer's name meet that criteria?

Yes.

As long as you can highlight a word I wrote and copy/paste it into your card, it passes, even if you have to change the capitalization. So, Unflawed and Jumping are ok, but not Death or Time.

I'll update the OP with all these corrections when I get the banner from Lily.

  • cellar
  • double
  • three or more spells

Cellar Guard |
Creature - Hound
Double strike, vigilance
Cellar Guard can't attack or block if three or more spells were cast this turn.
Any thieves attempting to pilfer from the count's basement storehouse best be prepared to bring a distraction for each head.
