Chamber of Totems

Ragged, starving, drenched in sweat, you climb determinedly up the forbidding stairs of an ancient sanctuary. Your journey was long and dangerous. They said your ambition had gotten the best of you, that none had returned from the trek to Estatuarium. But power is worth any cost, and they will suffer for their lack of faith.

At last you have arrived at Estatuarium, hungrier for the power within than for the food that would fill your stomach. But you are not alone in your hunger. You see scores of scholars and explorers who have also survived the journey, no doubt drawn by the potential for omnipotence. If the legends are true, only one may lay claim to the Spark therein. If it is to be yours, you must prove that you are worthy.

Insect Totem Challenge:
Reclamation Initiative
Enchantment [R]
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player returns a land card in their graveyard to the battlefield.
The Enkindi wander the planes, breathing new life into old memories for the mere joy of living through them again.

YingLung makes his offering before the insect totem. The towering beetle straightens up, then lowers its pincered mouth close to his face. It snaps them a couple times, and for a moment YingLung wonders if it is enough. Then the beetle straightens again, opens the wings on its back, then gives off a golden sheen, revealing the totem behind.

YingLung has conquered the insect totem and gains 1 point.

Instant
If target opponent cast a noncreature spell this turn, lands that player controls don't untap during their next untap step.

Flopfoot makes his offering before the worm totem. The titanic worm peers downward at the offering before it, and almost scoffing, swoops down with agility defying its stone façade. Wrapping itself around Flopfoot's body, the totem then squeezes from top to bottom, expelling Flopfoot from its presence.

Flopfoot has failed to conquer the worm totem.

This could be cool on a hex grid with a rule that you have to conquer two adjacent tiles to unlock the unopened ones

I'll try the monkey next

Thanks!

Something to keep in mind is that the board updates as players conquer totems. Whenever someone conquers a totem, take another look at the board in the first post to see if there new totems to challenge.

Hmm, that's a good thought — kind of like Explorers of Ixalan. If I revamp this contest, I'll keep that in mind. The corner totems aren't as attractive since conquering them doesn't reveal any new totems.

One thing I'd consider is whether or not we want to allow conquering 4-point tiles when there are are still 1-point tiles left to conquer.

BTW, build adjacent to 8s. Always build adjacent to 8s.

Fidelis Hound
Creature-Hound (R)
If Fidelis Hound would be controlled by a player other than his owner, instead exile him, then return it to the battlefield under his owner’s control
If you would lose the game for having 0 or less life, instead sacrifice Fidelis Hound and your life total becomes 5
2/3
