Two upsides of optional colors-
- You can use the card before you draw the lands of the optional colors
- You can draft and use the card in a deck that doesn't even have the optional colors

The second is not often used. With styles of cards like Vigor Mortis or Prepare // Fight or Gruul Nodorog, enough of the card's power is in the second color that you would at least want the possibility of getting it.

But with kicker, sometimes you don't plan to use it even when it's in color (Conqueror's Pledge anyone?) so it might be that people are more likely to draft them out of color and only splash with cards they wanted to use anyway like Rupture Spire.

Even though kicker has been brought back in Time Spiral, Zendikar, and Dominaria, we have still not had a full 20 card cycle of "one color to cast, one other to kick". We've had some with two other colors to kick, and an old allied cycle and half an enemy cycle I think. I'm going to try and make some new ones, but not all at once.


Shimmering Defenses - :2::w:
Enchantment
Kicker :3::u:
Whenever a creature attacks you or a planeswalker you control, you gain 1 life.
When ~ enters the battlefield, if it was kicked, create two 1/1 blue Illusion creature tokens with "This creature can't be blocked."


Call for Backup - :3::w:
Instant
Kicker :4::b:
Create three 1/1 white Soldier creature tokens. If ~ was kicked, those creatures gain deathtouch until end of turn.


Holy Blast - :w:
Sorcery
Kicker :6::r:
You gain 5 life. If ~ was kicked, it deals 5 damage to each opponent.


Strong Flight - :w:
Enchantment - Aura
Kicker :5::g:
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has flying.
When ~ enters the battlefield, if it was kicked, enchanted creature gets +4/+4 and gains trample until end of turn.


Flee the Destruction - :3::r:
Sorcery
Kicker :1::u:
Destroy target land. If ~ was kicked, that land's controller returns a creature they control to its owner's hand.

Counter target spell. If ~ was kicked, you may put a permanent card from your graveyard on top of your library.


Ambush Fish - :2::u:
Creature - Fish
Kicker :1::w:
Flash
Hexproof
When ~ enters the battlefield, if it was kicked, prevent all damage that would be dealt to it this turn.

Flashback is another ability that players can feel free to ignore, but it doesn't have as much design space because the effects have to be hybrid instead of gold.

Kicker :1::g:
All creatures get -1/-1 until end of turn. If ~ was kicked, all creatures lose hexproof and indestructible until end of turn.


Ruined Plans - :3::b:
Sorcery
Kicker :1::w:
Target player reveals their hand. You choose a card from it. That player discards that card. If ~ was kicked, that player sacrifices an artifact or enchantment.

Exile the top two cards of target opponent's library. For as long as these cards remain exiled, you may play them, and you may spend mana as though it was any color to cast spells this way. If ~ was kicked, add :r::r::r::r::r::r::r:.

Flying
When ~ enters the battlefield, flip a coin. If you win the flip, ~ gains haste until end of turn. If you lose the flip and ~ wasn't kicked, put it on top of its owner's library.

It is a solid concept. There are a lot of good cards here. Brainless Horror in particular made me smile. The name "Ruined Plan" is also funny because that is exactly how it feels to have that played against you.
I think that Prudent Dragon needs some work. Maybe it also deals some damage when it enters so even when it returns, it does something.
