Also, let me remind you that the mana rock is supposed to be in every deck in the product.

I'm not sure that's true. It's not explicitly stated in the criteria, and one of the examples (Command Beacon) was only printed in one deck.

Oh true, but iirc commons and uncommons always appeared in multiple decks.

It was my intention that my mana rock would appear in all the decks; it was just redundant to post it in both lists.

To Libe's point, it was never specified that the mana producer couldn't be in both decks, so it isn't relevant to use that as a judgment point for either submission.

given olah zep's relative newness to the forum, im pretty sure any of us could claim to be him and nobody would be able to dispute it

Let me try number grades and see if it matches my initial impressions. Grades are for general design, creativity, balance, flavor, and nailing the criteria. I'm being harsher than usual, not sure why

Libe

10111
11011
11100
12111
01111
11011

Total 25

Olahzep

01111
11021
00101
01101
01111
11111

Total 23

I'll stick with Libe

Feedback for olahzep
1. This looks dangerous, though I can't think of any concrete examples. For the menace ability, "tokens matter" is not a dimir thing. Better to just give all your creatures menace.
2. As above. Triple etb triggers if your commander is out, and I'm not sure why it changes creature type.
3. Why isn't this just Flash? Also it's weird for two decks in the same release to feature the same mechanics like evoke that should be one deck's specialty.
4. This has too many abilities and the final one is clunky. If it's worded like that I would've assumed its because you want commander tax to apply.
5. The two abilities are unrelated, you're relying on the commander to give lifelink but this card on its own doesn't make sense
6. I'd add a mana cost to the last ability so that there is some cost for dissuading the opponents from using kill spells on your commander.

also Libe I want you to know I respect the boldness of trying to get credit for a mechanic you didn't actually bother designing. didn't affect my analysis, but dropping in "this deck ntroduces the Backup mechanic (which is not featured among these preview cards)." was a spicy move none the less.

:duel:

Responding to this now because I didn't see it earlier.

I did design it, actually. It just didn't fit on any of the cards. I imagined the gimmick for this release of Commander decks was that each deck introduced a new mechanic. They would probably be mechanics that were a bit narrower in focus and didn't have quite enough design space to appear in a full set.

Feedback for Libe
1. This is just mycosynth lattice
2. Tutors aren't used much because they tend to lead to repetitive games. Repeatable effects aren't used much for the same reason. Repeatable tutors are doubly bad, and this isn't hard to repeat. Once your commander is out, this is even more nuts.
3. This feels a bit too Timmy for what's meant to be a Spiky card, like the chance that the opponent just gets to use their card anyway.
4. This card is my favorite out of the 12 for this round
5. What's with all the tutors? This is a bit above the curve, you've costed it as if the restriction of searching only for defenders is worse than it is
6. I misread this one as giving you life equal to the cmc of the card you cast for some reason. I guess this is not so bad

Make history and give the win to both finalists.

Alternatively, raise the stakes and have a last-moment tiebreaker task.

my understanding is that Q reserves his vote in order to break ties if they occur.
