I will require that it be a card that has never previously been judged in a contest, including CotW. I don't have a good way to enforce this rule, of course, so I'll have to trust that you to use your scout's honor.

Aw dang it. It actually won something, a contest I ran myself. Forever the thorn i my own side I am.

Maybe I could still spin the basic concept off into something. Mana from artifact sources in an artifact block could be a thing and Myr need more love.

Friendly reminder that there only around two days left until the first round closes. Get those submissions in!

Oscillating Protector
Creature - Elemental Knight (C)
Pulse (At the beginning of each upkeep, you may pay any amount of mana. The number of different colors of mana paid that way becomes your intensity of the pulse until the end of turn.)
This creature gains +0/+X, where X is your intensity of the pulse.
2/2

Edit: turned into , removed Vigilance, made common, made a soldier.

Rationale:

5th dawn took the idea that since you don't care what colors you use to cast artifacts, you could just throw an even mix of different basic lands into an artifact deck. So it gave cards to encourage that. One thing it doesn't want to do is force people into using lots of mana fixing to get five colors asap (though people can do that if they want), it wants it to happen naturally. A good thing about sunburst having linear scaling is you can still use it pretty well at three or four colors.

A bad thing about linear scaling is it reduces design space, since there are only so many effects that scale like that (like +1/+1 counters). I've made a "threshold 3" mechanic instead that can go on many different effects. Mine can also go on colored cards which further increases design space - this slightly defeats the idea of "whatever basic lands you have will do", but it's not that bad, the card below can be cast with 60% of the possible 3 color combinations.

But there needs to be some incentive to try to get to all 5 colors otherwise people will just play 3 color decks. Most if not all cards with this mechanic have their own way of paying off getting to 5 colors that doesn't have to be the same for every card (e.g. it doesn't always have to be an activated ability). The key is to make sure that the payoff is not so strong that it forces people to heavily mana fix, but strong enough that they would like it if it could happen naturally sometimes.

Card:

Hyper Vulshok - :2::r:
Creature - Human Warrior
Trichrome (Spend at least three colors of mana to cast this spell.)
Haste
: ~ gets +5/+0 until end of turn.
3/3

Converge is basically exactly what Sunburst wanted to be but better as it was more flexible. It almost feels like cheating to use it, because of that.

So I'll try to have some creativity. And note that I'm not reading any other entries so sorry if this is close to someone else's.

Sun Channel - N, T: Activated ability with an X equal to the amount of colors among mana spent.

Darksteel Channeler
Artifact Creature - Construct Shaman
Indestructible
Sun Channel - , : Target Construct you control gains indestructible and trample and gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each color of mana spent to activate this ability.
1/2

Less than 24 hours until the end of round 1! If you've been planning on any finishing touches, now is the time to do them!

Sunchaser Elves -
Creature - Elf Druid [C]
T: Add G
Chromatic - T: Add two mana of any colour. Activate this ability only if there are three or more colours among permanents you control.
2/2

to be clear, chromatic is a threshold ability word that triggers when you hit three colours.

Chromatic Myr 2
Artifact Creature - Myr [U]
Prismatic - If you have two or more colors among permanents you control ~ has "T: add one mana of any color." If you control a permanent of each color ~ gets +2/+2
1/1

Its been a while since ive made a card so hopefully the wording isnt too awful.
The idea is to reward players more for going further in and the ability should be pretty easy to slap on anything ever

Made some last minute edits:
- Changed the wording of Synthesize to balance it a bit.
- Edited the mana ability to -what I think- is more accurate.
- Added the "Synthesize vs. Sunburst" section.

Do our explanations not count as part of our submissions? (If a judge looks at the list with no names included, they won't see the explanations)

Oh, right, this was a thing.

To be fair, if these were real cards, the players wouldn't see our explanations either, and would have to judge them on what they get.

Yes but
1) they'd actually be able to play with them as part of their judgment process
2) in terms a mechanic, they'd be able to see it in the context of the whole set
3) I wouldn't in general trust players to be able to judge how well-designed cards are -- just whether they like playing with them.

The nameless file is basically for Mown. He can recognize users by their template style and explanations, so cutting those out helps him to be as impartial as possible.

just finished my initial pass, and it looks like this round was a hard one. very few stand-outs, and some of my favorite designs felt like they missed the criteria. not a lot of duds, either, though: most things wound up roughly in the middle. gonna be tricky to sort everything out.
