Design a creature with hire.

Hire <mana cost including (2/C)> (At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player may pay <mana cost>. If they do, they untap and gain control of CARDNAME. It gains haste until end of turn.)

Interesting choice on introducing two new mechanics together. It detracts a little from Hire itself. This card is clearly a defensive card. Without Hired: I like how Guardian allows you to double block more effectively. With Hired: I like how your opponent's have to make a choice - do I steal their Guardian, so I can get my other threat (maybe a 4/4) thru without it dying to a double block. The flavor ties it together somewhat.

explanation

Appreciate the explanation. I quite like the flavor of this design. The self-hiring thing makes me a little concerned as well. At some point, you will begin netting quite a bit of mana. This may require a slight rule change to make it only trigger on opponent's turns, if it turns out to be too efficient/design space becomes limited in the current state (but that's unrelated to your design). Overall, I think this is a solid entry.

The timing of the two upkeep triggers is a bit tricky for newer players. Often, they will be confused if they get the trigger when they hire the creature. This card also feels more blue than white. It's too efficient to generate this many clues. The interaction between Hired and its other abilities aren't very clear.

I like the story this card tells. With this guy comes snakes. He's immune to the snakes, but other creatures are not. I think it's a solid design.

The wording of the "dies or hired" ability is a bit unintuitive. My interpretation is that the owner of the original card would draw the first time the opponent hires it. The controller would draw once the Alchemical Mass dies. And, the opponent would draw once the owner hires it again (all of this is assuming a two player game). The flavor text also somewhat confirms this. All-in-all, I really like this design despite the odd play pattern.

This card is super swingy, but at least it give the opponent a chance to swing back for lethal if they're able to survive the first attack. I mean, this guy alone represents 12 damage (6 of which is first strike). Also, this guy gets weird in multiples...

Holy moly, this is a lot of words! Since hiring this card scales with its power and its power scales with dealing combat damage to an opponent, I fear there are a lot of scenarios where landing this card on T2 is easily just GG for your opponent (especially on the play).

Simple, but effective. I like the flavor that this card conveys without being overly complicated. It showcases the Hire mechanic really well, as a result.

Top 5 (in a relatively flat order):

  • arathinius's Fanatic Proselyte
  • Tekkahedron's Aspwielder
  • Yarium's Wandering Philanthropist
  • Shaz's Alchemical Mass
  • Johnny Valdez's Realm-Strider Paladin

Is it really that confusing? Both trigger at the beginning of upkeep, but one really only cares if you're not the owner, and the other only cares if you are already the owner. You didn't have to ever deal with both triggers unless you want to hire the creature while it's already under your control for some reason.

Other criticisms are definitely on point I think. I always forget that clues are actual permanents that can be utilized in other ways. Might make more sense as a card, but would need a different body and flavor.
