Last Week's Winner in the Polls: A Miserable Evening by Mown

Congrats to Mown for winning the tenth Johnny's Quest Challenge in the polls! Check out their awesome submission here!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

[Johnny's Quest] October 5 - 11

Welcome to the Johnny's Quest series. Every week I will be giving everyone a card, group of cards, or other restrictions that will be used to build a deck. Each card will come with various restrictions on the deckbuilding. Once the week is over, a new thread will be started where the community may vote on which deck they enjoyed the most, and a new card will be posted as well for new decks to be designed around. Feel free to edit your decklist as much as you like, but at the end of the week, I'll be taking the decklists as they stand. If you've ever participated in the Card of the Week (CotW) down in You Make the Card, then you'll be familiar with the system.

This Week's Card: --NONE--

This Week's Restrictions:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Last Week's Submissions:

Card: Meekstone

Restrictions:

  • There must be three or more copies of the Week's Card.
  • Total cost of the deck must come in under $150, based on TCGplayer.com's Average Price.
  • The decklist must be Legacy Legal.
  • Please include a unique name for the deck.

They've been going up a little late recently, so I put this up a half hour before the deadline. Sorry about that. But I wanted to make sure things got back on track, because I thought this week's Johnny's Quest would be a nice nod to NGA's recent addition of an MTGO forum.

4x Misty Rainforest
4x Hinterland Harbor
8x Forest

4x Simic Initiate
4x Skyshroud Ridgeback
4x Aquastrand Spider
4x Avatar of the Resolute
4x Plaxcaster Frogling
4x Vigean Hydropon
4x Blastoderm
4x Cytoplast Root-Kin
2x Prime Speaker Zegana
2x Cytospawn Shambler

Lay Creatures. Control the board or annihilate your opponent. Fading supplements slots where there just weren't enough graft creatures worth having.

This deck can manifest damage very fast. In the ideal scenario of t1 Initiate, t2 Avatar, T3 Hydropon you've done 10 damage from EtB triggers and up to another 6 from attacking. Turn 4 lethal doesn't seem particularly hard to manifest,

Man, one hour later and already there's a deck up! That didn't take much of any time, apparently.

Wish I finished my deck on time. This might've been my one shot at the title.

Redcap seems like a perfect buddy for Flayer of the Hatebound. I've always liked the reanimator-type strategies, but got turned off to the deck when creatures started getting too degenerate (ooh, look at me, I got a T2 Griselbrand/Jintaxia/Terastodon/etc.... aren't I the coolest thing ever?). But building around Flayer/Redcap instead might make for a casual deck that is fun, fair and feisty. As long as no-one is playing GY hosers. :P

Redcap Roadkill

Avatar: Muderous Redcap

Priming the GY and loading the hand:
4x Faithless Looting
4x Careful Study
4x Ideas Unbound

Roadkill...
4x River Kelpie
4x Flayer of the Hatebound
4x Geralf's Messenger

...with a grudge
3x Dance of the Dead //Cheap and pumps for Flayer but does nothing for Redcap
1x Makeshift Mannequin //Instant and gives the creature a 'counter' but costs 4 mana.
4x Wake the Dead //How cool is this card for this deck? I love the Commander set cards.
4x Footsteps of the Goryo

Budget free mana base
4x Polluted Delta
4x Bloodstained Mire
4x Scalding Tarn
4x Badlands
4x Underground Sea
2x Volcanic Isle
1x Swamp
1x Island

I think anyone who can make a deck with Mayael that can compete with the other generals should get bonus points.

I'm too invested in last week's effort not to post it.

Control the board:
4 Blustersquall @ 0.19 = 0.76
3 Blind Obedience @ 0.90 = 2.70
1 Orb of Dreams @ 0.56 = 0.56
4 Meekstone @ 1.90 = 7.60
$11.62 - 12 cards

Protect My Stuff
3 Counterspell @ 0.85 = 2.55 @ 3.27 = 9.81
4 Terra Eternal @ 0.29 = 1.16
$3.71 - 7 cards

Misc
2 Infinite Hourglass @ 0.30 = 0.60
2 Halimar Tidecaller @ 0.24 = 0.48
$1.08 - 8 cards

Mana Rocks
4 Dimir Keyrune @ 0.19 = 0.76 (Budget Creeping Tar Pit)
4 Worn Powerstone @ 0.61 = 2.44
1 Ojutai Monument @0.20 = 0.20
$3.40 - 5 cards

28 cards left $129.55 remaining

Land (Also win con)
4 Faerie Conclave @ 1.38 = 5.52
4 Blinkmoth Nexus @ 5.15 = 20.60
4 Mishra's Factory @ 1.56 = 6.24
4 Mutavault @ 13.99 = 55.96
1 Creeping Tar Pit @ 22.48 = 22.48
4 Plains
3 Island
4 Swamp

THere you go. Meekstone only works on creatures, leaving my lands and mana rocks free to attack. Naturally, they are evasive, indestructible and tribal-enabled. Infinite Hourglass speeds up my kill while making the opponents' creatures meekable. The rest is just control elements and gas.

Shame. I would have easily voted for this. Very creative.

Ashling the Pilgrim

Lands: 24
15 Swamp
1 Dakmor Salvage
4 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4 Mutavault

Creatures: 4
4 Pack Rat

Non-Creature Permanents: 16
4 Ensnaring Bridge
4 Liliana of the Veil
4 Shrieking Affliction
4 The Rack

Spells: 16
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Raven's Crime
4 Thoughtseize

So...how about a discard deck? One of my favorite decks to play was always TarmoRack. It would just devastate metas that weren't prepared for it. Well...WOTC decided that the deck wasn't good enough and blessed the world with another Rack. A few months ago a buddy of mine called me about a Rack deck that he was trying out for modern. So I took a look at it and was blown away by what I saw. They actually found a way to improve TarmoRack by removing Tarmogoyf altogether. I don't remember the exact list but...it fits very well with the Vanguard theme this week. One of the big struggles that we had with the deck was dealing with creatures that got through the discard wall. Well...Ashling the Pilgrim fills this void quite nicely.

So the main purpose of the deck is pretty straight forward...but it isn't just empty your opponent's hand and let The Rack finish the game. The deck has a really cool built in protection/win condition element to it with Pack Rat and Ensnaring Bridge. The interesting thing that we found when tinkering with this list is that you will find two different types of responses to the deck...and I don't know which one is better. The first is that your opponent will dump their hand on the board as quickly as possible trying to out race your discard spells. This type of reckless playing usually ends the game very quickly. The second is when your opponent forces you to use each of your discard spells rather than emptying their hand for you. This type of conservative style drags the game out a little bit...but is actually a safer win for you. Now that the removal can be dropped for Ashling the Pilgrim the deck is much smoother and has a more consistent lock with Pack Rat and Ensnaring Bridge.

The deck is a blast to play...and frustrating to play against. This is by far my favorite list that I have submitted for the Johnny's Quest so far. Let me know what you think.

Lots of combos here to produce a multitude of tokens with haste. Aluren or Thornscape Familiar allow you to cast your Grinning Ignus over & over. Take that back...Fiend Hunter would just be removal. Imperial Recruiter tutors for whatever creature you need. Grinning Ignus can leave you with some unused mana, so why not use that to draw more cards with Mentor of the Meek

Deck name: From Beyond

Vanguard: Haakon, Stromgald Scourge Avatar

3 x Waterfront Bouncer
4 x Misthollow Griffin
4 x Archaeomancer
4 x Torrent Elemental
1 x Mnemonic Wall

4 x Snapback
2 x Cyclonic Rift
4 x Equilibrium
4 x Foil
4 x Force of Will
2 x Commandeer

4 x Polluted Delta
2 x Misty Rainforest
4 x Underground Sea
2 x Tropical Island
12 x Island

Ok, this version plays much the same way. It abuses free counterspells in combo with Torrent and Misthollow, both of which gain a sort of immortality with Haakon. Snapback, Bouncer, and Equilibrium help remove the nasty "Zombie Knight" clause from creatures as well as deal with pesky threats. Archeaomancer and Wall help refuel the engine.

Interesting. My first impulse would be to change the creature type. Would changelings avoid Haakon's Zombie Knight" exile clause? Gatherer doesn't have an rulings on it.

Changeling has every type so they would still qualify as "Zombie Knight". Something like Snakeform or Polymorphist's Jest would work, but I don't think Snakeforming your own creature to get around Haakon's exile clause is very good value.

BTW, if anyone plays MTGO and owns most of the cards in their deck submissions, I'd be happy to try dueling with them, assuming the Vanguards aren't that expensive. I'd be running a more budget friendly land base, tho. :P

I would think Changelings are auto-exiles even if you don't return them from the grave since they are always Zombie Knights (as well as everything else). Conspiracy would work though, since they lose all other creature types.

Edit: Ah, Mage ninjas me

I usually own all or most of my submissions on MTGO. I don't own all of the original dual lands, but thanks to Vintage Masters, they are more budget friendly now. I own all of the Vanguards for this weeks contest, so all of those are budget friendly. Anyone can feel free to hit me up for a game on MTGO... same user ID... dknowle

I'm gonna have to edit my deck tomorrow if that's in time. I just realized I can't cast Torrent from exile in the current form.
