Caress the Sun
Enchantment - Aura {U}
Enchant creature.
Whenever enchanted creature attacks, Caress the Sun deals 4 damage to it.
"I flew high just to feel your warmth.
I held on tight, for it was my duty to you.
And then I fell because I couldn't anymore."


Potential improvement:

Caress the Sun

Whenever enchanted creature attacks or blocks, Caress the Sun deals 5 damage to it.
"I flew high just to feel your warmth.

Maybe it should be "attacks or blocks". It's still pretty weak, and the blocking clause isn't that strong because they still get a chump off it. Plus, it's pretty dumb to have a card that can be cost for mono red mana that stops attacking and not blocking.

I think this is probably a CMC 2 card. On most creatures, it's opponent's choice of Pacifism (CMC 2) or kill the creature (CMC 3-4). Compare Contaminated Bond.

Contaminated Bond is unplayable, and a card that gives your opponent a choice is strictly worse than either of the choices given. And it doesn't kill the creature, it Flame Slashes it. That costs 1 mana.

Guard Duty may (!) be a little OP, but Caress is not.

I was trying to contest his assertion that the effect should cost 3-4 mana. Even if for some reason or other you think flame slash at 1 is op, despite never breaking any format ever, I'm sure even you'd agree that it shouldn't cost 3-4.

I can see why Flame Slash would be OP by today's design methodologies (it did debut during the time Wizards thought Lightning Bolt was needed in Standard again).

If I were to update the cost to and alter the condition to both attacking and blocking, would it be acceptable to have it deal 5 damage instead? Not sure how big of deal activated abilities are in Standard right now outside of the crew mechanic.
