talk to me about politics, religion, philosophy, steven universe social issues, or whatever else you feel like! seriously, this is like my favorite thing to do.

This game is too easy with modern forum technology. It'd be better if you had to check it directly

Anyway, who is excited for Unstable?

Is that the weird underground ship game? Isn't it already out?

its the sequel to the weird underground ship game which is mostly the same thing except you play as an underground dirgible instead

it is technically out right now but it is in a super early stage of development and is both low on content and really unpolished so i am waiting until it is further along to play it

They said for the first one it suffered from going in two different directions, story heavy or rogue like. Did they pick a direction for the new one?

I hope they learned from the critics.

I don't know who "they" are but i'm not sure i agree with them.

Sunless Sea, i feel, was mostly a narrative/exploration sort of experience. There are rogue elements in the sense that dying means you soft restart, which is useful in that it lets you re-experience the same storylines again using different choices, or focusing your efforts in a different direction and accessing completely new storylines. The game itself was mechanically interesting enough to occupy your attention (generally thinking about where to trade next, aiming to gain gold so you can buy a specific weapon or get something to progress in a specific story) but wasn't really at all challenging or complex enough to be interesting in its own right. The "randomization" is also very soft, with the only real random elements changing from game to game being the location of the ports, and even then only somewhat (port cecil is always somewhere around the middle of the sea, for example), so its not really like rogue in that regard. There is permadeath (although some things carry over, making the start of the next run quicker), and I feel it enhances the storytelling experience, but if one were bothered too much by it the game comes with the option to turn it off. Runs are also much longer than they are in a roguelike, generally taking somewhere between 12 and 48 hours in my experience, before either dying or reaching an ending. (although newer players might die quicker due to lack of experience).

So no, I don't think I'd really call it a roguelike at all, nor would I say it puts much emphasis if any on gameplay elements. I think the gameplay elements primarily serve to enhance the narrative elements by providing an interactive platform via which the story is experienced and they do a fairly good job at that.

Sunless Skies seems to let previous runs influence future runs a lot more, though. I think you can bank your money a lot more easily, and might even be able to pass your ship down through generations. I imagine the end result is that while when you die your story elements will be reset to some degree, you won't be set back as much in terms of your ability to navigate the world, and so you'll be able to get back to where you were in the story a lot quicker. I don't know if that will end up making the game feel less like a game and more like a story or vice-versa though.

I'm not sure if I will get it, let other people figure out if it's good first.

It's weird how we have Halloween sale, thanksgiving sale and Xmas sale so close together. While in the first half of the year there's nothing.

I just got slay the spire and I'm bad at it. Instead of having xp and levelling up they just seem to give you more enchantments to make you more powerful, which can be a bit random as to whether they synergize with each other and with your deck
