Is there any canon source that explains how avatar magic works? The extent of my question is to twofold:

-Availability: Is it bound to Alara? From the cards I assume it's Ajani's specialty, though I think it's relatively common in Naya.
-Appearance/Mechanics: Are there descriptions of how the magic itself behaves? Soul's Fire wording makes me think of a creature-shaped fire blast, while Soul's Might resembles the unlocking of hidden strengths, Jojo's Stand-style.

Soul's Fire mechanically has the creature deal its power to target creature or player, so it's probably meant to be Ajani bestowing a burst of speed on an ally. And that ally gains a aura of fire (not to be confused with a fiery aura) that looks like them.

Ajani is shown using it in Flight of the White Cat
I believe he also uses it in the Alara novel, notably to fight off Bolas.

I don't think it has shown up since? I could be very well be wrong though

No, its literally a manifestation of their soul
Notably though, it cannot be used on ones' self. Only on others.

I'll check the comic, thank you!

That stinks...
Remembering a recent post of yours, I had hoped for a different answer for some reason :D

After having recuperated from writing The Inferno, I was left in a bit of a conundrum, as though I have several arcs as of yet unresolved, I was lacking in any idea to which direction I'd ultimately go.
So, in surprise, I find myself drawn to a... picaresque endeavor.

I think some of you can guess what that means.

But, I don't have a target to aim for!
Which means I'm taking nominations for which artifact to feature in the heist.

Could you expand a bit for the less bright back here? :D

(the name of Mel Odrum sprang to my mind for some reason)

Unfortunately, if you can't see the future, it will have to be a surprise.

Spoiler

I was really confused, because I read "picaresque" as "picturesque," and so I immediately thought of Saigo.

All in favor of Alessa kidnapping Saigo?

I don't think Alessa would steal from Maral, so items from From The Vault are out of the question.

Picaresque... how about the Spine of Ish Sah? Trying to steal it unseen would certainly fit the bill :D

I mean, it depends on what sort of story you want to tell. We've got a lot of artifacts of doom, after all, but perhaps it would be more interesting to 'liberate' one that could do some good?

Due to massive archive binging, I'm intrigued by the Master's Torch.

Not aiming for a weaponized artifact. Just something powerful/valuable.
It'll be a pretty straightforward heist story, but a lot of the shape ends up in being what the treasure is.

I'm tempted to reflavor this and use it entirely out of spite.

But I would prefer artifacts with actual cards. It gives me more an opportunity to anchor things, both flavorfully and mechanically.

Ah! I have a couple favorite artifacts in that case: Vexing Arcanix (mostly thanks to the Ice Age art making it look like the Golden Pelydryn due to context and me loving those books way to much at that time), Ventifact Bottle/Elkin Bottle (Two very different artifacts with the same basic form, hmm...), Bosium Strip, or for ‼Fun‼ times, Cursed Totem

What was included as a tear-out in this used The Thran book that I've been reading? I came to exactly the half-way point and found a little stub of thicker white paper where a tear-out whatchamajigger used to be.

My copy has neither tear-out nor stub, nor any evidence of extra spacing in the pages. Weird.

I'd bet "Join our mailing list" form, since that was fairly common back then, but it's worth further investigation.

I feel like the second part of Healing Paths is slipping out of my control. I want to show how Sharaka interacts with various humans and I'm having a lot of fun writing the conversations, but none of them are essential to her story; I get that perfection is reached when there's nothing left to remove and all that, but I also want to write Sharaka in more relaxed situations.* I'm afraid that otherwise she'll have a too intense, high-strung aura around her; seeing how characters react to a crisis is important, but what if their crises is all you see of them? I don't know.

Any pointers?

*Her next piece will have some of that, but she will be among viashino, so it's not the same thing.

downtime is important in longer narratives. the dramatic curve doesn't just go up or the reader gets bored of the constant ramping. what I'd recommend is seeing if you can find a way to tie the more relaxed parts and the action bits together. maybe some foreshadowing in the conversations? maybe she needs something from them for the other bits?
