Last Week's Winner in the Polls: Teferi's Puzzle Mask by dknowle

Congrats to dknowle for winning the eleventh Johnny's Quest Challenge in the polls! Check out their awesome submission here!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

[Johnny's Quest] October 12 - 18

Welcome to the Johnny's Quest series. Every week I will be giving everyone a card, group of cards, or other restrictions that will be used to build a deck. Each card will come with various restrictions on the deckbuilding. Once the week is over, a new thread will be started where the community may vote on which deck they enjoyed the most, and a new card will be posted as well for new decks to be designed around. Feel free to edit your decklist as much as you like, but at the end of the week, I'll be taking the decklists as they stand. If you've ever participated in the Card of the Week (CotW) down in You Make the Card, then you'll be familiar with the system.

This Week's Card: Cloudstone Curio

This Week's Restrictions:

  • You must use three or more of this week's card.
  • Total cost of the deck must come in under $175, based on TCGplayer.com's Average Price.
  • The decklist must be Modern Legal.
  • Please include a unique name for the deck.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Last Week's Submissions:

Card: --NONE--

Restrictions:

Redcap Roadkill

Avatar: Muderous Redcap

4x Faithless Looting
4x Careful Study
4x Ideas Unbound

Roadkill...

...with a grudge
3x Dance of the Dead //Cheap and pumps for Flayer but does nothing for Redcap
1x Makeshift Mannequin //Instant and gives the creature a 'counter' but costs 4 mana.
4x Wake the Dead //How cool is this card for this deck? I love the Commander set cards.
4x Footsteps of the Goryo

Budget free mana base
4x Polluted Delta
4x Bloodstained Mire
4x Scalding Tarn
4x Badlands
4x Underground Sea
2x Volcanic Isle

Finally you pick a good card. :excite:

Invasive Terrain

Lands: 25
4 Dryad Arbor - $7.59 x 4 = $30.36
21 Forest - Free :chaching:

Creatures: 31
4 Acidic Slime - $0.15 x 4 = $0.60
4 Elvish Visionary - $0.15 x 4 = $0.60
4 Rampaging Baloths - $0.94 x 4 = $3.76
4 Scryb Ranger - $0.43 x 4 = $1.72
3 Solemn Simulacrum - $4.14 x 3 = $12.42
4 Undergrowth Champion - $14.09 x 4 = $56.36
4 Wood Elves - $0.18 x 4 = $0.72
4 Yavimaya Dryad - $0.20 x 4 = $0.80

Artifacts: 4
4 Cloudstone Curio - $13.73 x 4 = $54.92

My grand total comes to $162.26. The deck is quite simple. Play your lands over and over again.

Ooh, I already built a modern budget deck around Cloudstone Curio, and it's a favourite of mine.

For the future, may I suggest allowing players to throw a handful of Un cards into an otherwise normal deck. I've been wanting it ever since I failed to understand what "freeform legal" meant and missed my chance.

Something like this is what I was hoping to do if it was Legacy legal. I have no idea how to optimize it though.

Tag Team Alliance

Combo card du jour
3 * Cloudstone Curio 13.73x3=41.19

More ETB combo-y goodness
3 * Collected Company 8.01x3=24.03
3 * Ghostway 8.68x3=26.04
3 * Rally the Ancestors 1.02x3=3.06

An army of allies (with just a few snakes)
4 * Jwari Shapeshifter 3.00x4=12.00
4 * Phantasmal Image 6.64x4=26.56
4 * Kalastria Healer 0.13x4=0.52
4 * Ondu Cleric 0.15x4=0.60
4 * Harabaz Druid 3.38x4=13.52
4 * Coiling Oracle 0.25x4=1.00

4-color budget mana base!
2 * Reflecting Pool 5.49x2=10.98
4 * Ally Encampment 1.73x4=6.92
4 * City of Brass 2.56x4=10.24
4 * Evolving Wilds 0.14x4=0.56
2 * Terramorphic Expanse 0.17x2=0.34
2 * Swamp
2 * Island
2 * Forest
2 * Plains

Total: 172.37

Was thinking of building something like this anyway, but hadn't even considered Curio until I saw the card of the week.

Allies do stuff when allies ETB. Curio makes sure that there's always an ally to play, making stuff happen. CoCo cheats out more allies. Ghostway and Rally both generate massive amounts of triggers and help answer the deck's biggest weakness - sweepers. (I suppose Elesh Norn is the deck's arch nemesis, but hey, what deck doesn't have at least ONE arch nemesis?)

Kalastria Healer is the principal wincon. Play it, copy it, kill ppl with it. Oracle and Image aren't allies, but Oracle is arguably one of the best ETB-value 2-drops in Modern. Image can be an ally if it wants or it can be a copy of my opponent's Elesh Norn. (Take THAT Elesh!)

The only bad tech is that the shapeshifters will auto-die if they ETB via Ghostway or Rally and there isn't a copyable creature already on the table (can't copy creatures that ETB at the same time), but at least the Jwaris will still generate ally-ETB triggers. And Rally has fun synergy with Curio in that I can bounce all of the creatures that I Rally to avoid the exile at EOT clause.

The mana base is a bit hairy - could def throw more money into it if the budget were higher. Hopefully a T1 fetch and T2 non-basic covers most bases.

That one sounds fun to do.

That would get my vote for creativity!

Oracle of Mul Daya? Azusa would be even better, but $$$. Rites of Flourishing if you want to emphasize making good use of bad tech.

They were definitely on the list...but cost required me to use Scryb Ranger as a backup to Cloudstone Curio. As for Rite of Flourishing...it doesn't really jive with the rest of the deck. I guess it could swap out but...I really like Scryb Ranger here to both act as a combat trick and a backup to Cloudstone Curio.

But, I wanted to do the Ally deck! Now I have to decide whether I need to put a new spin on it or come up with something totally new.

You could always edit your first post in the thread to include your deck. Then I'd be ally ninja'd. Or even better! You could do the same thing but add ninjas to your ally deck. Then I'd be ninja-ally ninja'd. HWAAAAA! *ninja pose*

Edit:
I recommend a Rise of the Hobgoblin round...I love that card.

A few other suggestions:

CMC restricted (ie: only cards of a particular CMC (excluding lands))
Magosi, the Waterveil because dang if I know what to do with it

Really...any of the 3CM alt rounds could fit :P

Heartless Curiosity

// Spells
4 x Cloudstone Curio
4 x Cloud Key
4 x Heartless Summoning

// Creatures
4 x Omenspeaker
4 x Sea Gate Oracle
4 x Doomwake Giant
4 x Dinrova Horror
4 x Rune-Scarred Demon
4 x Phyrexian Ingester

// Land
4 x Watery Grave
4 x Drowned Catacomb
4 x Temple of Deceit
6 x Swamp
6 x Island

Total $167.40 (had to remove some land for basics to get the total within budget)

This deck actually started out as:
Infinite Elemental Deck

I went back to the drawing board & built something completely different. Although it doesn't go 'infinite', this deck gives a lot of value in each creature you play at a reduced cost then bounce back to hand. There's card advantage, mass creature destroy, creature exile, tutoring, permanent removal & discard. Unlike the red elemental deck, I've really enjoyed playing this deck.

Hmmm, I almost took a similar route as your elemental version. I was originally just gonne tweak this cause I wasn't having any inspiration before I came across Altar of the Brood:

Spoiler

I was gonna swap Urza for Cloud Key

That's funny & I was lacking inspiration for most of the week too. Besides the fact that I wasn't happy with the deck, I had already done an infinite Grinning Ignus deck last week. I finally told myself, the deck doesn't have to go infinite if you can get a lot of value out of each bounce.

BTW, thanks to everyone who voted for my deck last week & thanks to squinty for this contest. My first win!
